Local Cuisine

Tanzanian cuisine blends Indian and African influences. Spices are widely used to enhance the flavor of dishes. Meals primarily consist of fish or meat, including local game like zebra, ostrich, and buffalo.

The most common dish in Tanzania is ugali, a type of porridge made from cornmeal. It is usually served with meat, fish, or vegetables. Another staple is pilau, a highly spiced rice dish eaten with meat or fish. Bean and coconut soup, often served as a stew, is also a main dish.

On the eastern coast, particularly on Zanzibar Island, fish and seafood are delicious, reasonably priced, and guaranteed fresh.

Other Cuisines

Due to British colonial influence, which brought Indo-Pakistani labor, the country has many Indian restaurants. Samosas and masala rice are among their main dishes and are very affordable. In major cities and tourist areas, international cuisine is also available.
