Beaches and Seaside Resorts

With two distinct coastal areas that complement each other in terms of seasons when considering the monsoon, Sri Lanka offers a great selection of places to enjoy ocean pleasures. However, in many spots, you need to be cautious of strong currents along the coasts.

The south and west coasts, where the ideal period runs from December to April, have the highest number of seaside facilities and the most tourist-friendly zones. Resorts like Mirissa with its "postcard-perfect" vibe, Unawatuna (a sheltered bay ideal for families), Hikkaduwa (snorkeling and nightlife), Weligama (for surfing), Tangalle (quiet and wild), Bentota (with its hotel complexes), or even Negombo (close to the international airport) are all interesting options, each in their own category.

Fewer choices on the east coast of the island, which is best visited from May to September, though you’ll find vast white-sand beaches around Trincomalee and Pigeon Island (fantastic for swimming with sharks and turtles), Arugam Bay with its world-renowned surfing reputation, and even Passikudah for those seeking high-end accommodation.

Water Activities

- Diving: Many spots are great for diving and snorkeling, with some renowned locations like Hikkaduwa and especially Pigeon Island if you also want to swim with sharks and turtles.

- Surfing: There’s plenty of choice here too, from Weligama for beginners to Arugam Bay for experienced surfers.

- Deep-Sea Fishing: Beyond "stilt fishing," which has become a tourist attraction (and a great photo opportunity), deep-sea fishing is practiced in several coastal spots like Mirissa and Hikkaduwa. You can catch tuna, swordfish, and barracudas.

- Whale (and Dolphin) Watching: This is best done from Mirissa between November and April, or from Trincomalee (on the east coast) from May to September.

Thalassotherapy and Wellness

Like many tourist destinations with high-end hotel complexes, "wellness" has become a popular activity for visitors. However, here it’s less about Western-style thalassotherapy and more about Ayurveda, a millennia-old traditional medicine still widely practiced on the island. There are many programs, including week-long cures at specialized centers.

Otherwise, there are shorter and more affordable options that, beyond Ayurveda, offer the full range of wellness treatments and activities, available in hotels and massage parlors.

Hiking

Hiking

While not a major hiking destination, Sri Lanka still offers some fantastic experiences. Start with the ascent of Adam's Peak, which is more of a "pilgrimage hike" than a traditional trek. You climb the 5,500 steps of this 2,243-meter mountain, a sacred Hindu site, to reach the summit at sunrise.

More traditional hikes include Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock, Horton Plains, or—with a guide—the Knuckles Range near Kandy for those who enjoy off-the-beaten-path adventures. Everywhere offers stunning landscapes and opportunities for encounters. Then there’s the "new" Pekoe Trail, a 300 km route divided into 22 stages through the tea plantation region between Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Ella.

Cycling

Choose between easy, flat routes exploring the archaeological sites of Cultural Triangle (Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura...) or more challenging rides through the mountainous tea plantation region in the island’s center.

Outdoor Activities

Safari

Not many know it, but you can go on safari in Sri Lanka. Primarily in Yala National Park, in the southeast of the island, where you can see a rich variety of wildlife, including leopards, elephants, buffalo, monkeys, crocodiles, and bird species.

Golf

Like any former British colony, golf is present in the country, with three or four well-regarded courses set in stunning landscapes. Colombo is also home to the second-oldest royal golf club outside the UK, founded in 1879.

White-Water Sports

For canyoning, rafting, or kayaking, head to Kitulgala in the heart of the island. It’s all about lakes, rivers, and rapids surrounded by jungle.

Paragliding and Aerial Sports

If you want to try hot-air ballooning, the best experience is flying over Sigiriya fortress and the jungle at sunrise. Alternatively, you can go paragliding or zip-lining near Ella.

Cultural Life and Activities

With over 2,500 years of history and numerous UNESCO-listed sites, Sri Lanka is a dream destination for culture lovers. At the heart of this richness is the Cultural Triangle, which includes must-see spots like the rock fortress of Sigiriya, ancient capitals such as Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, and the five sacred caves of Dambulla. Then there’s Kandy, often described as the spiritual soul of Sri Lanka. Add to that the colonial heritage visible in Galle and Nuwara Eliya.

But Sri Lanka’s cultural side also includes religious festivals, traditions, and local customs you’ll discover along the way—all offering unforgettable experiences.

Nightlife and Going Out

Like many similar destinations, Sri Lanka’s nightlife is somewhat limited. You’ll find a few clubs and rooftops in Colombo, but the real action is in seaside resorts like Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, and Arugam Bay if you enjoy surfer vibes and beach parties...
