A Lot of Quantity, Little Quality

France offers a very wide selection for those looking for travel magazines (in the broad sense), including both general and thematic publications covering the entire world or, conversely, a specific region (particularly within France), for nearby vacations or distant journeys, whether you're a fan of a particular type of travel or even a tourism professional.

That said, while quantity is abundant, quality is not always up to par. Indeed, you’ll regularly find magazines of little interest on newsstands, whose sole purpose is to distribute as many ads or "advertorials" as possible under the guise of articles or travel features. Fortunately, their lifespan is generally quite short...

It’s worth noting that more and more magazines are now available in digital format, including subscriptions.

Mainstream Press

World Discovery

Or rather, magazines covering travel or the world as a whole, sometimes with a thematic angle. Expect to pay around 5 € per issue.

A/R

  • Bimonthly.
  • "A/R" (Round Trip) inspires travel both near and far, exploring unlikely destinations, the mishaps that spice up trips, or travelers who’ve found their own paradise. It’s also a magazine that gives pride of place to sustainable tourism.

Animan

  • Bimonthly.
  • A travel and discovery magazine that, every two months, presents the most beautiful travel and nature reports, along with a portfolio of 15 collectible images, superbly printed in each issue.

Carnets d'aventures

  • Quarterly.
  • Adventure in all its forms, including practical aspects.

City Magazine

  • Quarterly.
  • Art of living, escape, and discovery of the world’s cities...

Couleurs Maroc

  • Quarterly.
  • The magazine for culture and art of living in Marrakech and Morocco.

Désirs de voyages

  • Bimonthly.
  • This magazine offers an artistic approach to the world at large, both in content and form. It covers art of living, the art of places, and in a way, a permanent invitation to dream through atmospheres or traditions. A rather "high-end" publication for a "discerning" audience...

GEO

  • Monthly.
  • The magazine that needs no introduction and the equivalent (and competitor) of National Geographic. It follows a similar approach but sometimes takes a more "engaged" or critical stance on the topics covered. Ideal for discovering the world and an excellent complement for travel. Note that there’s also a monthly "GEO Ado" for young travelers aged 10 to 15.

Globe-Trotters Magazine

  • Bimonthly.
  • The magazine of the ABM association, created by and for independent travelers.

Grands Reportages

  • Monthly.
  • Practical sections and reports from the four corners of the planet, including off-the-beaten-path destinations, approached from an "adventure – nature – discovery" angle. Also packed with useful information for planning future journeys. Traditionally, it’s the newsstand magazine closest to the independent traveler (but will also interest others).

Lonely Planet Magazine

  • Monthly.
  • The magazine of the famous guidebook series of the same name, offering the same practical, independent-traveler-focused approach in its content.

Montagne Magazine

  • Monthly.
  • A thematic magazine featuring reports and practical information of all kinds about mountains in France and abroad. At the crossroads of mountaineering and trekking or high-altitude hiking.

National Géographic

  • Monthly.
  • The French version of the famous American magazine, whose first issue dates back to... 1888. In short, a benchmark for photography and reports presented from nature, history, culture, and society angles. However, it’s not a magazine for those looking for practical information but an excellent complement for travel and discovering the world.

L'Officiel Voyage

  • Bimonthly.
  • The world of luxury travel for the "happy few," as they say!

Petit Futé Mag

  • Bimonthly.
  • Published by the guides of the same name.

Terre sauvage

  • Monthly.
  • The "grandeur nature" magazine and a reference in this field, with stunning photos and solid content. More of a thematic magazine than a travel publication per se. Very interesting for discovering the places and beings that inhabit our planet.

Trek Mag

  • Monthly.
  • THE magazine for trekking, walking, and hiking around the world. Packed with reports and practical information of all kinds. A publication aimed at all audiences, from weekend hikers/trekkers to those heading to far-flung destinations.

Luxury Travel

  • Bimonthly.
  • High-end tourism...

Business Travel

  • Bimonthly.
  • A practical magazine for business travelers, featuring articles, features, and plenty of information and news that may interest this category of travelers.

Voyages voyages

  • Monthly.
  • The Belgian travel magazine.

Discovering France

This has been a major trend for some time now. The French market now hosts a multitude of magazines focused on France, a region, or even a city within France or its overseas territories. It makes sense, given that France remains the world’s top tourist destination and the preferred choice for French people’s vacations. Note that print versions of these titles are often only available in the region they cover (though most are also online).

Metropolitan France

Among the general-interest titles, you’ll find:

  • "Détours en France",
  • "Journal de la nature en France",
  • "Balades en France".

At the local or regional level:

  • "L'Alsace",
  • "Ar Men",
  • "Belles régions de France",
  • "Bourgogne Magazine",
  • "Bretagne Magazine",
  • "Champagne-Ardennes Magazine",
  • "L'Esprit du Sud-ouest",
  • "Massif Central",
  • "Pays Basque Magazine",
  • "Pays Comtois",
  • "Pays du Limousin",
  • "Pays de Provence - Côte d'Azur",
  • "Pays du Nord",
  • "Pyrénées Magazine",
  • "Terra Corsa",
  • "Terres Catalanes".

Overseas Territories

Among the titles:

  • "Guadeloupe Magazine",
  • "Une saison en Guyane",
  • "Martinique Magazine",
  • "Réunion Magazine",
  • "Océan Indien".

Professional Press

Not available on newsstands (though most can be found online), these newspapers or magazines are created by and for tourism professionals.

The content includes plenty of news of all kinds, in-depth articles/features, as well as various practical aspects useful to the industry. Reading them can be quite instructive in seeing how "tourism products" are created and dismantled—and how certain things are sometimes sold to us...

L'Écho touristique

  • Weekly.
  • News, features, products, comparisons—L'Écho Touristique covers the key events in the tourism industry.

Le Quotidien du tourisme

  • Weekly.
  • A daily turned weekly, offering comprehensive information for professionals.

Tour Hebdo

  • Weekly.
  • Continuous news for tourism professionals: travel agencies, tour operators, accommodations, institutions, air transport, destinations, trade shows...

Univers des voyages
