Population

90% of the archipelago's inhabitants are Black, descendants of slaves brought there in the 18th and 19th centuries to work on cotton plantations and salt pans. There are also 8% White (8%) and 2% Mixed-race (2%). The archipelago also hosts immigrant labor, particularly from Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Across the islands, Providenciales is home to half the population, though the capital, Cockburn Town, is not located there.
