Culture

With its rich yet turbulent history, a population whose culture and traditions remain very much alive and distinct, Haiti is undeniably a world of its own. More than the built heritage found in certain cities (Cap-Haïtien, Fort Liberté, Jacmel) or its impressive UNESCO-listed site "Citadelle, Sans Souci, Ramiers" near Cap-Haïtien, it is above all Haitian society and how it functions that should be discovered first.

Relaxation-Holidays

Since 2013-2014, the tourism sector has seen a revival, with efforts to turn Haiti and its beautiful beaches into a beach holiday destination similar to others in the Caribbean. Several projects are underway or have already been completed with the help of foreign funds, particularly from the United States. This is how Cow Island or the lovely beach at Labadie, near Cap-Haïtien and privatised by several cruise lines, are among the first sites marking this tourism renaissance. In short, the country has potential, but it is still largely untapped—or at least very localised—for now.

Independent Travel

Haiti is not among the easiest destinations for independent travel. The lack of infrastructure (though this is slowly improving) and, above all, a certain level of insecurity mean the country is better suited to more experienced travellers.

Organised and All-Inclusive

Beyond cruises stopping at Labadie or organised excursions to the Cap-Haïtien region from Dominican Republic, there are a few French and other agencies that offer trips to Haiti. Typically, these are "discovery tours" lasting a few days, either on their own or combined with the neighbouring Dominican Republic. Since the destination is not the easiest for independent travel, there is an audience. Notably, since late 2015, the all-inclusive formula has made a comeback (there was once a Club Med) with the opening of the first hotel specialising in the concept (a Royal Decameron).
