This is the destination's strong point, with its "resort islands" since the country decided to invest in high-end/all-inclusive tourism in the (19)70s.
Independent Travel
The Maldives is a very easy independent-travel destination, perfect for first-time travellers—if only because, apart from Malé, it is not permitted to visit inhabited islands. You stay exclusively on "resort islands," which have no local population (except staff). As a result, independent travel is rare in the Maldives, and almost all visitors opt for the organised/all-inclusive package, which is as secure as it gets.
