UNESCO World Heritage Sites

In addition to the archipelago's unique "pearling activity," Bahrain has one site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list:

Qal'at al-Bahrain (2005)
This is the country's main archaeological site, complemented by an old Portuguese fort. The entire site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cities and Cultural Heritage

Amwaj Islands
These are artificial islands connected to each other north of the archipelago. With their beaches, modern or even futuristic buildings, and ubiquitous new technologies, they aim to follow in Dubai's footsteps.
Manama, Bahreïn
Manama
The capital and main city. Modern in style, it offers a few museums (including one on the pearl-diving industry, a local practice inscribed by UNESCO), but above all, shopping and nightlife (with alcohol permitted) that attract many nationals from neighbouring countries.
Muharraq
The former capital is built on an island facing Manama. You can still see some old buildings and a renowned souk there.
Qal'at al-Bahrain
This is the country's main archaeological site, complemented by an old Portuguese fort. The entire site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Riffa
Bahrain’s second city is home to an old fort dating from the early 19th century. It is also known for its commercial activity and golf course.

Natural Heritage

Hawar Islands
These islands, very close to Qatar, are popular with birdwatchers. Partly uninhabited and regulated, they still host a hotel complex.
Tree of Life
Also known as the "Tree of Life". This four-century-old tree stands alone in the middle of the desert and has become a tourist attraction over time.
