Cities and Cultural Heritage

Dochula Pass
This Himalayan pass, over 3,000 metres high, is home to 108 stupas at its summit, along with a monastery and a rhododendron botanical garden.
Jakar
This fairly touristy town, set in a valley "with a Swiss feel," is where Buddhism was born in Bhutan. You can visit several monasteries and a small 17th-century fortress here.
Paro
Though primarily known for hosting the country’s only international airport, Paro is also home to several temples (especially in its surroundings, starting with the famous Taktshang) and a fortress-monastery that overlooks the town.
Punakha
The former capital is home to the Punakha Dzong (17th century), one of the kingdom’s most important palaces. You can trek in its surroundings.
Taktshang, Bhoutan
Tiger's Nest Monastery
This is the most famous and photogenic of all the country's monasteries. Built on a cliffside, it overlooks the Paro valley from 700 m above.
Thimphu
While not exactly a "must-see", Bhutan’s capital still boasts several traditional buildings, a number of museums, a well-known market, and some interesting monasteries in the surrounding area.
Trashigang
This trading town in eastern Bhutan is primarily a base for exploring the surrounding area or setting off on a trek.
Trongsa
The small town is located between Thimphu and Jakar. It is home to a massive 16th-century fortress-monastery and a small museum housed in an old tower.
