Where to Eat While Traveling?

Each Place Has Its Own Cuisine

For you to expand: All types of restaurants, local eateries, fast food, markets, picnics, etc.—there are many ways to eat while traveling, each with its own specific features.

Pricing

For those looking to spend as little as possible, the obvious solution is to eat at markets and small local establishments, favoring local food. In Western countries, opt for picnics or the chance to cook your own meals.

Much like hotels, some establishments mentioned in guides may raise their prices. So, don’t rely solely on what’s listed in guidebooks or on places in the most touristy areas. Also avoid middlemen and touts who will take you to restaurants where they earn a commission (often added to your bill).

In United States and a few other countries, you can find discount coupons in free publications (or online) for certain restaurants. In Europe (and occasionally elsewhere), menu prices often vary depending on whether it’s a weekday or weekend, or lunch versus dinner (the latter usually being more expensive). Keep this in mind, while remembering that you’re also there to enjoy yourself.

Sometimes, the most budget-friendly option displayed outside (meant to attract customers) may not be offered inside. In that case, don’t hesitate to ask for it, or to inquire about the "daily special."

As for bottled water, which can add up during certain trips, avoid buying it in restaurants or the most touristy spots.

Hygiene

For you to expand: The Western stomach can sometimes be "sensitive" to certain foods or what’s offered in some establishments.
