Hi there! It’s been a while since I last picked up the Nikon... but I’m still drawn to beautiful photos. Here’s my vote: -Dolma 1: the frost This one really stole my heart—those crystals look like they were captured under a microscope!

-Ragamuffin 2: the white goats during milk collection in China The image was probably taken far from the now highly urbanized parts of China.

-Kate 2: the white cat on the rooftops of Istanbul I love cats *and* Istanbul, and I couldn’t help but wonder: is this kitty deaf? Genetics do link white fur to hearing issues.

Here’s my vote:

3 points for Elhine’s photo 1. For the peaceful charm of this street, highlighted by the white of the walls and the clothing. 2 points for Kate’s photo 2. For that strange white cat wandering across the white rooftops. 1 point for Gaura’s photo 1. For the white in all its grand, kitschy glory (and a few memories).

There are plenty of other stunning whites, but since we have to choose...

Hi,

Gaura 3, 3 points. I really love the diagonal composition, the detail of the starched lace, and the nape of the neck.

Girardinpho 2: 2 points. Gorgeous winter atmosphere.

Nilsou 2: 1 point

Hi Françoise,

Could you clarify how many points are awarded for each selected photo?

Thanks! :)

A thousand apologies, Agnès, for my choice without the points... my habits fade without practice...

I’ll stick to the same order:

-3 points : Dolma 1 for the crystals in the snow -2 points : Ragamuffin 2 for the little goats -1 point : Kate 2 for the white cat on the rooftops of Istanbul

Hi Agnès, Thanks for the amazing follow-up and compiling all the photos. 220 messages in the thread—you can tell it’s the Month of White! 😉

For my vote, I picked: Montagnard74 3, 2, and 1 🤪 No, just kidding, it’s a blank vote... Really, I tweaked my choices a bit so I wouldn’t skew the game right away... Not sure it’ll make much difference, though...

Here’s the verdict: 3 points: Kate 2 The cat of Istanbul. Because you can’t get more on-theme than this, and I love the layering of the old rooftops with the modern towers in the background. Though, I’d love to hear the story behind this photo—you really had to go out of your way to find that cat!

2 points: Nilsou 2: The Great Wall of China in ice. The shot is so well done, it feels like it’s at real scale! I’d love to see a different angle to appreciate the work and proportions.

1 point: Gaura 2: Mont Blanc. And don’t ask me why 😉. I really like the trail of the alpinists.

I also loved Raga’s photo of the goats, but there wasn’t enough white, Rouquine 3 and the oculus—I would’ve voted if you’d picked the blurred one—plus Hérodotos 1 and Elhine 1, the contrast between the white walls and the people is amazing... Gaura 1 and her lace-like temple could’ve won one of my points, but Mont Blanc got in the way... In the end, the choice was agonizing...

3 crystals for Dolma_1 (Normandy) 2 steps for Nilsou_2 (China) 1 hall for Rouquine_3 (New York) (Hope Attila, who’s no fool, can figure it out) 😉

EL Elhine Globetrotter ·
Rouquine38 photo 2: 3 points. I loved it right away!

Dolma photo 1: 2 points It’s so bright! And I really like the leaning trunks that suggest movement.

Nilsou photo 2: 1 point The wall... sorry... The Great Wall looks almost like a construction set or a sandcastle in the snow. I’m intrigued by the detail of the stone joints.

Hi everyone,

After going through the photos I liked, I picked the ones that inspire travel the most.

Gaura, photo 1, 3 points. I’d already voted for this one when it was posted in the other thread. An amazing temple and lovely movement in the sky and water. Perfectly fits the theme.

Herodotos, photo 1, 2 points A street scene just the way I love them—it wouldn’t have worked as well for me without that person adding life and meaning to the shot.

Ragamuffin, photo 2, 1 point I like the scene more than the photo itself. They say in group shots, at least one person should look at the photographer. Well done—two goats played along!

I really liked Dolma’s photo 1, but it’s too bad the little red bench that would’ve made it stronger got cut off. Rouquine’s photo 1 suffers from the missing skier ;), her photo 3 with its perfect alignment, and Herodotos’s lively photo 2

Hello everyone, here’s the vote from the Thai jury, even though the concept of snow is pretty foreign to us.

We kept our selection focused on how well the photos matched the theme.

3 points for Dolma’s photo #1

No need to argue—when I saw it, I just knew it would be my top pick. When a photo looks like a painting, that’s usually a sign the magic worked.

2 points for Rouquine38’s photo #1

When snow looks like whipped cream dusted with powdered sugar, you know the dessert—er, the photo—is a success.

1 point for Nilsou’s photo #2

The shot looks even more real than reality itself. I wonder if a slightly lower angle would’ve made it even better…

Congrats to all the participants!

Nilsou 2 🙂🙂

Kate 1 🙂

I had a tough time deciding on this third spot (UnaMilanese 3, Dolma 1, Raga 2, Rouquine 38 3, and Kate 2 were also in the running!)

Since a choice had to be made, I prioritized photos that had the most white to stay as close to the theme as possible.

3 points : Dolma - Photo 1 - The frost-covered trees of Normandy As soon as I saw this photo, I was like "wow," it’s spot-on for the theme. It’s a photo I would’ve loved to take 😉 but I didn’t know it could get that cold in Normandy 😮.

2 points: Kate - Photo 2 - The rooftops of Istanbul and its white cat. Gorgeous shades of white... you had to find that white cat, right place, right time 😉

1 point: Gaura - Photo 1 - The White Temple of Chiang Rai in Thailand. It must be impressive to see. I would’ve just framed it a little tighter to highlight the white even more.

I also really liked Dolma’s mille-feuille, Montagnard’s white Buddha, Girardinpho’s Iceland in winter, and Solène’s Sultanate of Oman.

A unique event in the contest!

There are four tied winners! 😮

Kate 1, Gaura 2, Attila 3, and Nilsou 1

1 point each.

(I didn’t warn you, but this month, the last shall be first! 😛 Organizer’s privilege! 😏)

To break the tie, what better than alphabetical order?

But since I sense a mutiny coming, in reverse order... 😛

Thanks for organizing this, and kudos to Dolma for her photo. I didn’t vote for it because it doesn’t make me feel like traveling—and even if it did, I hate snow! Anyway, congrats because this shot really *pops*, as they say in the lingo.

Since my frosty trees (yes, it *does* happen sometimes in Normandy) took first place on the podium (what a funny idea!), I now have to "organize" the next contest (which *isn’t* a funny idea! 😏)...

I’m absolutely terrible at this kind of thing, so I’ll just copy-paste to introduce the theme. Check back later today—I hope it works out—for March’s contest.

Thanks for your votes, and congrats to the 2nd and 3rd place winners, and to everyone else too, of course! 🙂
