Discussion around March 2026's Theme: Metal, Metallic

Hi everyone,

Every time I reach a summit in Italy—bam—a cross. It’s often made of metal. I don’t photograph them very often.

Near Leonora, a small mining town in the Goldfields of Western Australia, a ghost miners' camp gives you a glimpse of the harsh living conditions of the first gold prospectors and their families. Corrugated iron was a big improvement over canvas tents... maybe less so in summer.

To contrast with corrugated sheets, I suggest a little tour of Place Stanislas in Nancy, my hometown. Wrought iron and gold for the gates, and as for the sculptures, I assume they're made of bronze. Now that’s some metals...

I was surprised that no photos of those wrecks in Solitaire had appeared in this thread yet... Thanks for sharing them and for bringing back some memories! Including those of the famous owner of the place who passed away a few years ago now. I’ve forgotten his nickname...?? My wife had chatted about stamps with him, and he gave her a whole envelope of them... A really friendly guy who embodied the Soul of Solitaire.

No, not quite. Did you forget?! In "But Where on Earth Is This Thing (5)?", you showed us the statue of James Joyce in Trieste (I assume this photo is yours; see below), and it was me who recognized it right away (as a huge JJ fan, that wasn’t a problem at all, of course) ...

Back in the day, we had a good laugh with this game on VF 🙂 Nowadays, it’s hardly possible since you need just a few seconds with Google Lens to find a place from an image.

What a memory, Herbert! And hello.

Yes, this photo is mine. From a day of bora wind in Trieste, a border city with a multifaceted identity—so captivating.

It’s strange how framing and background can change a photo. Even though the statue is identical, it feels like it’s not in the same place in the city.

About this game, where I could ask to recover lost photos (thanks for the tip, Herbert), I don’t quite agree with you. The issue isn’t technological evolution—it’s coexistence. Because in reality, nothing stops you from playing, searching, thinking, experimenting, or communicating, except the untimely intrusion of Google Lens users.

Have a good weekend!

Absolutely. That was actually the first thing I thought: is this really the same place?! No rows of houses on the left and right, but all those boats on the water give the place a completely different vibe. I’d already copied and saved your photo back then—that’s why it’s so stuck in my head. By the way, I can’t find anything on ojeventi.it...

The issue is coexistence. Because in reality, nothing prevents you from playing, exploring, thinking, experimenting, or communicating—except the untimely intrusion of Google Lens users.

If you want to put it that way, I can only agree with you. Well, the idea of this "coexistence" is simply appealing—it promises quick success without too much effort...

I still plan to stand one day next to that statue, and if I manage to overcome my inexplicable reluctance about the Balkans (which will depend on the city of Trieste), I’d also like to bike to Pula (in Croatia), where Joyce spent half a year in 1904/05 as an English teacher. And there, I’d love to go to a café where Joyce is currently (see the travel journal "Escapade in Istria", 11th photo), have a beer with him, and chat about everything and nothing—about Ireland and Ulysses. Though I’d probably have to pay for his drinks, since you know Joyce wasn’t just a world-renowned writer, maybe even the greatest of the 20th century, but also a notorious drunk who never had any money and was always hitting people up for cash. His chronic lack of funds and his poverty-induced begging were legendary. But hey, I’d happily buy him a beer (or several)... It’d totally be worth it. 😏

Have a great weekend too.

We're halfway through March's contest... and only 13 participants! That's not many—bring your families and friends along!

I finally found a way to illustrate the contest intro: From ore to rocket, from wire to the Eiffel Tower—or, if all else fails, your self-portrait at the bottom of a soup spoon—the theme is broad enough that you should be able to come up with at least three ideas pretty easily!

1) The Super Pit, Kalgoorlie, WA 2) North Korean rocket at the Youth Palace, Pyongyang

3) The Rabbit Proof Fence, near Morawa, WA

4) No need to introduce this one

5) Self-portrait at the bottom of a soup spoon

Anyone else up for idea #5?
