Thanks for explaining "billabong" (a word I’d heard before but never knew the meaning of 😉)

Same here—I only knew it as the clothing brand, nothing more [;]

Ah! That’s why the name rang a bell! The brand! 🤔

That Grenoble local gets on my nerves with those gorgeous photos every time!!! 😠 Joking, of course—it’s a treat. 🙂

Bruno, I promise I’ll try to find some other photos, less stunning ones... I’ll have to dig through my old hard drives 😅

Hi Catherine,

I’ve got a little question about your photo no. 2 in the contest:

"Sunset over Arjuzanx lake, Landes"

That "name" doesn’t sound *very* French. Where does it come from?! Any idea?!

Thanks in advance.

KA Kate Globetrotter ·
Hi Hery

I asked my son, who’s from Landes, and he told me: "I’ve no idea, but it’s Gascon!"

I looked it up online: "The name Arjuzanx is of medieval Gascon origin, most likely linked to a fortification (arx) and a natural feature of the terrain (wet valley/juzanx)."

Good evening Catherine,

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for your detailed explanations. That’s more than enough for me. Honestly, I kinda had a hunch about Basque (no idea why). So, geographically speaking, I wasn’t too far off! I did a bit of digging online: Gascon and Basque (along with Béarnais) are *very* close. It’s really fascinating. Plus, thanks to your explanations, I now know where Les Landes is in France. Not bad, right?!😉

Wishing you a peaceful Sunday...

I accidentally posted a photo of Lake Geneva in freezing weather from 2012 here instead of directly in the contest. Here are a few more to complete the series. It was quite a challenge to take these photos with a fierce *bise* wind blowing, the ground like an ice rink, and the fear of falling with my precious camera gear😉

Really lovely series, Noëlle—it must’ve been quite the workout to take those photos! 😅

Hi there,

I’m replying here to your message posted in the contest.

Hello,

I hope you’ll excuse me, but I just can’t make up my mind (not even on a single photo), so I’m voting “blank”…

Good luck to all the contestants. Best regards,

Puma2A

Instead of awarding good points, maybe you could also tell us which photos you liked by commenting on them a bit. It’s always nice to get feedback—positive to stroke our egos, negative to improve ;)

Instead of handing out gold stars, maybe you could also tell us which photos you liked, with a little commentary.

Hi Kate, Well, actually, this time I didn’t connect with any of the images suggested... And... I have no idea why???? I looked at the suggestions several times... no little light bulb went off....

Just because you take a lot of photos, like I do, doesn’t mean you’re necessarily able to express opinions or critiques about what others do in that field. Apart from obvious technical details that are off, like a tilted image, a subject that’s too centered, or an unsuitable vertical framing, etc., I’m not able to give what you’d call an "artistic" opinion in photography. (Even when I like one of my own photos, I don’t know why!!)

Sorry. I’m more of a "hands-on" person than an "intellectual".... Keep up the good work.

Hi Alain,

Just goes to show, we really are "all different" 😉 I don’t have a professional eye for photos either: I also notice crooked horizons, awkward compositions, bad exposure, etc., but that’s about as far as it goes. Then there are photos (without the flaws I mentioned earlier 😏) that just "speak" to me right away... and there were a lot of those in this contest. "We’re all different!"
