The « Chicago Picasso », also called « The Hawk », is a steel sculpture that stands about 15 meters tall in Daley Plaza, downtown Chicago, and weighs around 150 tons.

After Calder’s (see post 13) and Picasso’s, here’s a third abstract sculpture in Chicago’s public spaces: « The Sun, the Moon and one Star », better known as « Miró's Chicago » or « Miss Chicago ». This sculpture by Joan Miró is 12 meters high and made of steel, wire mesh, concrete, bronze, and ceramic tiles. The bronze and concrete form the main surfaces of the sculpture. You can admire it at Brunswick Plaza... Gorgeous! hgb

Leaving Sévaré: « Ka sira dia » (lit. "May the road be good." = "Have a good trip!")

Youvarou: After the meal, you’ve got to do the dishes.

Timbuktu: Commemorative plaque above the entrance to Heinrich Barth’s house.

(The attached photo isn’t mine; it’s just to read the inscription clearly.)

(Unconfirmed)

Bamako: Maliba Monument (= mali-ba = hippo-big = "big hippo") on Independence Avenue, very close to the French Institute of Mali.

(To be honest, I can’t remember if the hippo is "metallic" or not—maybe concrete? Sorry!)

In Thailand, brass—a copper and zinc alloy—covers many religious monuments. Here are a few photos taken in Chiang Mai:

The color of Thai brass reminded me of the gold of San Marco in Venice and its 4,200 square meters of mosaics. The golden tesserae are cut from slabs of transparent glass into which gold leaf is inserted.

The more photos I see in this discussion, the more I’m like, "Oh yeah, there was that too!" But the die is cast 😉

Yep, there are a lot of metals. When we say "metal," most people first think of iron, cast iron, stainless steel... I added gold and brass to mix things up a bit.

What a great idea!

That other massive metal structure on Circular Quay is impressive—you wouldn’t think such a sea monster could dock there! A room with a view of the Sydney Opera House, not bad! As long as you were on the right side!

Weather note: the photos weren’t taken on the same day ;)

Not really metal, but they’re Australian, and there’s definitely some metal vibes in this music video shot in the outback. Midnight Oil – Beds Are Burning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejorQVy3m8E

Hi everyone,

I should’ve shared this photo (discovered in a copy of my pictures taken in Marseille back in January 2018):

We have a winner! Envallis Congrats!

As for my very last contribution, it’s a weird find I made in a forest in the Lake District in England: a tree trunk with coins hammered into it… with varying degrees of success. I have no idea what this custom means?!

Thanks for all your amazing contributions to this thread.
