Where to go with the family in summer 2026: Madeira or Guadeloupe?

Hi there,

We’re a family of five (our kids are 6, 15, and 19) and we’d love to go somewhere warm with our feet in the water during the first two weeks of August 2026. We’d also like to do some cultural visits and a bit of hiking. We were thinking of Guadeloupe—I know it’s not the ideal time of year, but we don’t have much flexibility. Is it really a bad idea, or can we still enjoy it despite the weather?

Another option for us would be Madeira, which seems more reliable weather-wise, but it sounds like the beaches are less accessible and not as nice.

We haven’t really looked elsewhere because everything else (except the Canary Islands, Balearics, or Corsica) seems way too expensive. But if you’ve got any recommendations, don’t hesitate—we’re just starting to look into it.

Thanks so much,

Pierre

Hi there,

Have you considered Sicily or Sardinia? I think they’re cheaper than Guadeloupe...

Good evening! Are you specifically looking for an island? Anyway, when it comes to the climate in August, I wouldn’t hesitate between Madeira and Guadeloupe—I’d choose Madeira. Guadeloupe is hot and very humid… not really ideal for getting around, let alone hiking! For beaches in Madeira, just head to the neighboring island of Porto Santo. The climate will be more pleasant (milder) than in France or Spain, where heatwaves hit every year (except Brittany and Normandy).

Hi there,

We’re thinking about it too, but I’m worried it might be too crowded in Sicily or Sardinia in August. Maybe you’ve got some great tips?

Thanks, Pierre

Oops, I thought you were leaving in July, sorry. I was there in July (Sardinia), and it was totally pleasant. August with the Italians on vacation is a whole different story

In summer—especially July and August (because of the crowds)—I’d avoid the entire Mediterranean basin unless you *really* love extreme heat and are a fan of "farniente."

Personally, I’m so glad I left Provence—it’s way too crowded and overrun with tourists, and the summer heat is unbearable. Migrating a bit farther north to higher altitudes was a game-changer. Your choice of Madeira wasn’t bad at all—the temperatures there are more moderate in summer.

Why not the Azores?

I totally get why people head to Iceland, Norway, or Greenland in summer… though I’ve never been myself.
