This is where we chat (and definitely don’t argue) about the theme "Urban Tiny House," the topic for November 2026’s contest.

Here are a few examples of tiny houses photographed in Tokyo back in March 2016, now part of the album:

Hi there, In the first photo (9 floors), and actually for the others too—except the second one—are you calling these buildings "small houses"?!
RA Ragamuffin Globetrotter ·
What matters is that this house is built in an urban setting with other houses (...) that are taller to highlight the contrast between the different buildings next to it

Hey Raga

I posted my first photo to check if I understood all the guidelines correctly. My image shows a small-urban-house, as required. But in your instructions, you said:

What matters is that this house is built in an urban setting with other houses, either the same size or taller, to show the contrast between the different buildings next to it.

There aren’t any apartment buildings or other urban structures to show that contrast. Let me know if I’m way off, and I’ll delete my photo 🙂

Or what’s left of it after an earthquake?

Yep, remains-of-an-urban-tiny-house 😛

Hi Ragamuffin, I put together a little slideshow for the November contest "Small Urban House." The photo scroll doesn’t start automatically—this way, you can get a preview of all the photos first. To view in slideshow mode, click the appropriate icon at the top right. 😏 . https://public.photowebcloud.fr/albums/6ae9e644739f4

Hi Julie

Slideshow for the November "Small Urban House" contest.

Thanks, that’s sweet of you!

As a thank-you: here’s a photo of a small house you know ;)

Good evening Raga,

Could I get an answer to my question?

Hi Catherine,

I’m afraid your photo might not show what Raga wants to see. For example, I don’t see any contrast between large and small houses. You should check out Montagnard74’s photo—it’s perfect! But I’m not Raga, so... I’m worried there won’t be many photos this time.

(As for my photo, I’m not too sure either) hgb

Hi Hery,

Thanks for replying—I was starting to feel like I was invisible. Or did I say or do something, or am I something, that the organizer doesn’t like? 😕 So, I won’t be taking part this month; I’m just not feeling it anymore.

Hi Catherine,

I also find this situation a bit confusing: when you're completely in the dark about something, it’s not very pleasant. I understand your reaction.

I think he mentioned houses and, apparently, ones surrounded by buildings—not isolated ruins... so of course he’s upset😏

Hey folks,

I’ve started digging through my photo library and came up empty.

I’ve got small houses, sure, but nothing contrasting with larger ones.

Hopefully others have what you’re looking for—it’d be a shame if the contest, already struggling after the Pagaljavab photo controversy, fizzled out.

Hello,

Kate hasn’t logged back in since your last request. Like all of us, he’s got a life outside VF.

Pretty much everyone seems to be focusing on the photos Raga used as examples. It doesn’t say the other buildings around have to be taller or even much taller. Reread the intro—it even mentions identical buildings.

I really like this little contest where I can share my small photos taken with my phone, and sometimes people even vote for me! :-)

From what I’ve seen in recent editions, it feels like you’re taking this way too seriously.

Raga wrote: "to show the contrast between the different buildings next to it" in her introduction. Personally, I understand that it must be surrounded by taller buildings.

But like Agnès, I didn’t find anything on my hard drive (I don’t have many urban photos—excluding historic centers—and the few houses I’ve photographed are either the same size as the others or were taken in isolation).

Don’t generalize, please 😏😛

For the contest theme, I get that contrast is key. By comparison, a "small house" can only be called small if there’s a bigger one next to it. If they’re all the same height, none are small—or big. They’re just… meh houses 😏
