Voilà... je m'adresse à ceux connaissent le Nouveau Mexique et qui ont déjà séjourné ds cette région-là (moins connue que l'Utah ou l'Arizona!...)
En avril prochain, je voudrais faire sur une seule journée:
la route qui va de Farmington à Taos, en visitant au passage Chaco Culture et Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness...
En fait, je ferai plus que passer... puisque je voudrais rester 3H à Chaco Canyon et +/-2H à Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness....(Si tout se déroule comme prévu, j'aurai déjà fait Bisti Wilderness la veille!!...je croise les doigts pour avoir un temps clément!)
Ensuite, aurais-je alors encore le temps de faire toute la route jusque Taos??
C'est que le coin est "paumé"... pas d'autoroute!... que des petites routes!...Est-ce "roulant"?? Quel itinéraire me conseillez-vous?? Y-a-t-il un itinéraire plus "touristique" qu'un autre??
Est-ce dangereux de rouler sur ces routes après le coucher de soleil (beaucoup de virages??, pas d'éclairage??..)
Ou alors je fais une étape (juste pour dormir)... mais où??
A cette période de l'année, le soleil se couche vers 19H30.
Par avance, je remercie tous les aventuriers qui ont déjà randonné ds ce coin "perdu" et qui pourraient me faire profiter de leur expérience

C'est une trop longue étape (à moins de la faire "à la japonaise") car il y a trop de route (et de piste) et il faut effectivement au moins le temps que tu as indiqué pour visiter Chaco canyon et Ah Shi Sle Pah.
Mon conseil est de visiter Ah Shi Sle Pah et Chaco Canyon puis de faire route jusqu'à Bernalillo juste pour dîner et dormir (bon choix de motels), c'est déjà une belle journée surtout pour avril.
Le lendemain 2 solutions possibles : revenir sur la 550 pour prendre la jolie route 4 passant par Jemez Pueblo pour aller visiter Bandelier (faire la balade jusqu'à la kiva en haut des echelles) puis continuer jusqu'à Pojoaque pour prendre la 503 jusqu'à Chimayo (belle église) puis les jolies routes de montagne 76 et 518 en visitant les esthétiques églises de Las Trampas, Talpa et San François D'Assises (à Rancho de Taos) avant d'arriver à Taos.Prendre la I25 et sortir vers Cochiti pour visiter Tent Rocks (un peu style Capadocce en Turquie) puis aller à Santa Fe puis la 285 jusqu'à Pojoaque pour continuer le circuit évoqué en 1.La plupart de ces routes (en dehors de la I25, de la 550 et de la 285) sont des petites routes assez sinueuses sur lesquelles on ne roule pas vite.
Attention, par temps de pluie les pistes vers Bisti peuvent être impraticables car le revêtement des bonnes pistes se transforme en boue qui s'agglutine sur les pneus et transforme la piste en vraie patinoire.

Depuis mon post, j'ai continué à réfléchir... et je me demandais justement si ce n'était pas possible , après Chaco canyon et Ah Shi Sle Pah, d'aller dormir à Los Alamos.
J'avais bien pensé à Bernalilo... mais il y a aussi bcp de route pour y arriver!...Et ça m'éloigne justement de Bandelier que je voulais visiter le lendemain (avec tout le circuit que tu décris jusque Taos, d'ailleurs!..)
La jolie route 4 est-elle si sinueuse?? et vraiment pas conseillée si jamais nous étions plus tard que prévu, après nos pérégrinations ds Ah Shi Sle Pah??

Tu mettras plus de temps à aller jusqu'à Los Alamos plutôt que jusqu'à Bernalillo et tu risques de faire cette jolie route 4 (sinueuse mais pas vraiment difficile) dans la pénombre ou de "speeder" tes visites de la journée alors que si vas tranquillement par la 550 à Bernalillo et que tu te lèves un peu plus tôt le lendemain matin 😇 tu feras cette jolie route en en profitant et en faisant quelques arrêts (falaises de Jemez, Soda dam, caldera...) avant d'arriver à Bandelier. I's up to you...

Je continue à réfléchir... (ça fume... tellement je pense... et re-penses🙂...)
Il est possible que je doive envisager de suivre mon circuit (Phoenix-Phoenix) dans l'autre sens (du fait d'une ouverture plus tardive que prévu du parc de Mesa Verde 😕! Est-ce courant d'ailleurs que nps.gov fasse de telles modifications qui arrivent bien tard pour élaborer un circuit correct😠??)

A quelle heure devrions nous partir le matin, pour profiter au mieux (sans courir!) de Chaco et Ah-Shi-Sle Pah, avant d'aller dormir à Farmington? Je suppose que ds ce sens-là, la route pour aller à Farmington, en fin de visite, ne nous poserait pas de problème?

Le plus tôt possible (maximum 8h), ton programme est chargé si tu veux prendre le temps de visiter !
La route pour Farmington ne pose pas de problème même de nuit mais il faut que tu repères bien à l'avance où est ton motel car Farmington c'est grand et la plupart des motels étant regroupés dans un petit secteur, si tu arrives de nuit tu pourrais tatonner avant de trouver ton motel.

En fait, Mesa Verde ouvre, en avril 2010, avec 1 semaine de retard par rapport à ce qui était prévu en novembre dernier lorsque je construisais notre itinéraire…Il ne s’agit donc pas d’ une grande modification… mais qui, pour moi, a son importance : en y arrivant à la date initialement prévue, je trouve le parc fermé !...
En faisant mon circuit ds l’autre sens, j’ai la chance d’arriver à Mesa Verde le 2ème jour de son ouverture….
Mais cela crée d’autres inconvénients…(le contraire aurait été trop beau !)
En tournant ds un sens:
- je trouve Mesa Verde ouvert (Yes !..)
- je visite Painted Desert en fin de journée (Yes !)
- je fais Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah en fin de journée jusqu’au coucher de soleil
mais:
- je suis à White Sands de midi à 15H00 (beurk !... la mauvaise heure !!)
- je fais Bisti le matin jusque 13H (beurk !…)
- je suis à Bisbee et Tombstone pendant un lundi (c’est peut-être mort en début de semaine !)
- j’ai bcp de « chance » de trouver Taos Pueblo fermé
En tournant ds l’autre sens:
- je trouve Mesa Verde fermé (beurk !...)
- je perds 1 matinée à Sedona (je gagne 1 matinée à Phoenix… Bof !)
- je fais Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah le matin
- je visite Painted Desert en début d'après-midi (Bof !)
mais:
- je suis à White Sands en fin de journée jusqu’au coucher de soleil (Yes !...Mais encore faut-il que le soleil soit présent !)
- je fais Bisti l’après-midi jusqu’au coucher de soleil (Yes !...)
- je suis à Bisbbe et Tombstone pendant un week end (il parait qu'il y a plus d'animations à ce moment-là!)
- j’ai plus de chance que Taos Pueblo soit ouvert (il ré-ouvre mi-avril... mais sans plus de précisions que cela !)
Voilà… en pesant le pour et le contre , quel sens choisirais-tu à mon circuit ?

Voilà… en pesant le pour et le contre , quel sens choisirais-tu à mon circuit ?
Difficile à répondre à ta place pour ce choix cornélien car tout dépend de tes priorités et de tes goûts, ainsi que que du programme global du voyage (par exemple, que prévois tu pour remplacer Mesa verde si ce parc est fermé ? le demi journée à phoenix est elle vraiment obligatoire ?).
En complément d'information : je préfère Bisti badlands à Ah Shi Sle Pah car le premier est plus varié et plus photogénique surtout en seconde partie d'apès midi, White Sands est sans conteste mieux en seconde partie d'après midi mais sache qu'en avril ce n'est pas l'absence de soleil le plus grand risque mais la présence de vent (fréquent à cette époque) qui obsurcit la vue.
PS: As-tu fini toutes les démarches qu'occasionne l'installation de ta fille à NY??
Elle est maintenant installée à NYC depuis près de 2 semaines, elle a commencé son stage non rémunéré 😕 (mais où elle bosse comme une employée normale) et s'est trouvée une colocation sympa dans Manhatan où elle s'est déjà fait quelques connaissances. La fille est donc contente 😎, pendant que la bourse des parents l'est nettement moins 😐.

Depuis l'élaboration de mon circuit, je n'avais pas pensé à retourner voir sur le site de nps.gov!

Je voulais rajouter que l'avantage de tourner ds le sens décrit ci-dessus, c'est que je fais la partie Colorado en début de parcours.
Comme cela, si les routes sont impraticables à cause de la neige, je peux zapper cette partie du circuit, pour rester plus longtemps à Farmington et prendre mon temps pour faire Bisti, Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness et Chaco Canyon.
Encore faut-il aussi qu'il n'ait pas plu ds cette région, sinon les pistes pour y arriver seront aussi impraticables!...
Reste le problème que Mesa Verde n'ouvre que le 11/4😕
Et puis pour assister au coucher de soleil à White Sands... encore faut-il qu'il y ait du soleil et pas de vent (comme dit Sedonax!...)
C'est vraiment difficile d'élaborer un bon sens au circuit... avec des conditions météo aléatoires!🏴☠️

En venant de Los Alamos, je suppose qu'il est plus facile (et plus court) d'accéder à Chaco et Ah Shi Sle Pah , qu'à Bisti?
En venant de Farmington, il est plus facile (et plus court) d'accéder à Bisti (par la route 371) qu'à Chaco Canyon et Ah Shi Sle Pah (qui, eux, sont accessibles par la route 550)
Pour faire au plus court, je suppose qu'il vaut mieux grouper le même jour, les visites de Chaco Canyon et Ah Shi Sle Pah, et laisser Bisti pour un autre jour ?
Je te demande ça, parce que je voudrais savoir s'il est envisageable d'inverser l'ordre de ces visites, sans trop allonger le nombre de Km à faire sur route et surtout sur des pistes...
C'est à dire: en venant de Los Alamos, faire Bisti (et Ah Shi Sle Pah ?) , puis aller dormir à Farmington...?

Painted Desert en début d'aprem ce n'est pas catastrophique (dans mon souvenir !)... évidemment c'est la visite de Mesa Verde qui est plus restreinte...
mais je privilégierais Bisti et White Sand...
Qq remarques :
- en sortant de Montzema Castle & Well, si vous avez le temps, empruntez la gravel road qui mène au V-Bar-V et sa concentration impressionnante de pétroglyphes. Le site n’est ouvert que du vendredi au lundi (et que jusque 15h30).
- à Sedona, West Fork Trail : on a mis 2h40 à l’aller en trainant pour faire des photos et 2h au retour car j'étais un peu à la ramasse (après avoir fait Broken Arrow Trail jusque Chicken Point + Submarine Rock le matin à pied, pas en jeep 😛))...
- à Sedona toujours, il est difficile de faire un choix parmi toutes les possibilités de balades, randos, points de vue 😉... Scheurman Mountain Trail et le point de vue qu'il offre après une petite 1/2h de grimpette (facile) est superbe !
- le petit train Durango-Silverton, vous pensez le prendre ? parce qu'en hiver et jusqu'en mai (http://www.durangotrain.com/ride-us), c'est Durango <--> Cascade Canyon et ça prend du temps 😉

Faire le tour comme décrit ci-dessus (avec un début de visite de Mesa Verde le 8/04 comme prévu, avec ce qu'il y a d'ouvert....😕), et essayer de revenir à Mesa Verde (après notre petit tour ds les San Juan Mountains) le 11/04, 1er jour d'ouverture du parc, pour voir Cliff Palace à 9H.... Mais on verra sur place ... parce que ce jour-là, je voudrais aller à Bisti l'après-midi jusqu'au coucher de soleil... Le 11/04 va donc être une longue journée🤪
C'est dommage de refaire 2 fois, tte la route jusqu'au site même de Mesa Verde (quand on quitte la route principale, j'ai vu qu'il y a encore un bout de chemin avant d'arriver au VC ....)
Maintenant la réussite de ce programme dépendra aussi de la neige ds les San Juan Moutains... de la pluie ou non pour Bisti et compagnies.... de l'absence de vent et présence de soleil à White sands....Et je ne te parle même pas des missiles😛😉

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

There are several attractions along the way:

- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
