So far, I've never had any major issues with Lufthansa.
And Emirates, which also isn't part of any of the 3 airline alliances, still outclasses them. At least it made you want to fly with them. Good advertising 😉

Hello,
That’s not the case for everyone. Lufthansa is really pushing it when it comes to disregarding passenger rights! They’re way ahead of all the others—first place on the podium for refusing to apply Regulation 261/2004! For a simple refund of a ticket canceled by Lufthansa in 2023, you have to go to court. And even worse, after Lufthansa was condemned on July 2, 2025, you still had to hire a bailiff on August 25, 2025, to enforce the ruling! Pretty tough stuff!

My son had the same nasty surprise with his flights this summer, Paris to Bangkok with Kuwait Airlines.
The airline canceled a lot of flights, and he ended up with a 1-hour layover on the way out and 26 hours on the way back.
They were taken care of during the layover—bus then a hotel where they could have their meals.
The hotel wasn’t amazing, but it was clearly better than the airport terminal.
Wi-Fi outage on the Paris-Kuwait flight.
He found it well below Qatar or Emirates, but the price was also much cheaper.

Hi Delphy83,
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Wow, what an adventure!
Can you tell me how long before the flight your son was notified?
Did you know he’s entitled to compensation (a partial refund of his ticket or even more since the flight was canceled)? I’m sure Erjome can shed some light on this topic.
Have a great day, Delphy83! 😊

Hi there,
They were notified a few months in advance, so more than 14 days before the departure date.
As a result, they’re not entitled to compensation. Plus, even if it had been last-minute, since it’s a return flight from a non-EU country with a non-European airline, they wouldn’t qualify.
The airline must provide necessary assistance while you wait for your departure: refreshments, meals, two communications, a hotel night, and transport from the airport if the departure is the next day—which they did.

Hi there,
If it's indeed a connecting flight—that is, a single flight made up of multiple segments under ONE booking—each passenger is entitled to a flat-rate compensation of 600 euros based on the distance, UNLESS the airline can PROVE (simply claiming it isn’t enough) that the issue was due to (and I quote) "extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken" (end of quote).

Hi,
I checked your site, but I don’t think compensation applies in this case because:
compensation for cancellation isn’t due if:
the airline informed passengers of the flight cancellation at least two weeks before the departure time—which is what happened here
Additionally, the departure was from Bangkok with a non-EU airline
This was a Bangkok–Paris flight with a layover in Kuwait City, operated by Kuwait Airlines.

Hello,
I visited your site but I don’t think you’re entitled to compensation because:
cancellation compensation is not due:
if the airline informed passengers of the flight cancellation at least two weeks before the departure time, which is the case
Yes, but if the connecting flight was delayed by 3 hours or more compared to the new schedule, passengers are entitled to compensation.
Also, departure from Bangkok with a non-EU airline
If it’s a connecting flight made up of several flight segments, it remains a single connecting flight. So, if the first flight segment departed from the European Union, the ENTIRE connecting flight is subject to Regulation 261/2004 of the European Parliament and Council, whether the airline is European or not, and even if the different flight segments are operated by separate airlines due to a codeshare.
It’s a Bangkok - Paris flight with a connection in Kuwait City operated by Kuwait Airlines.
In this case, it’s different since it’s a flight departing from a third country to the EU, operated by a non-European airline. Indeed, Regulation 261/2004 applies:
- to all flights (connecting or not) departing from the EU, whether the airline is European or not;
- to flights (connecting or not) departing from a third country to the EU, if the airline is European.
Best regards,
