Which off-the-beaten-path regions to visit in Mexico?

Hello,
I did some research after your message, as I’d love to visit San Juan Raya. Transportation seems doable, but I can’t find any accommodation there! Just to remind you, I’ll be on foot.
There’s an Airbnb that would’ve worked for me, but they’re not responding to my messages—it’s probably no longer available!
Just in case, since you live in the area, do you happen to know of a place (simple, even rustic, but not expensive...)?
Thanks in advance!
Sylvie
Hi, Sylvie,
I doubt you’ll find anywhere to stay in San Juan Raya—it’s a tiny village lost in the middle of the cacti. But there are accommodation options in Zapotitlán Salinas, 14 km from San Juan Raya, including bungalows in the botanical park and places in the village itself. You can find listings on booking.com. For example, La Cabaña for 1,100 pesos per night. Enjoy your walk!

Hi there,
Have you checked Booking or Hostelworld? They list a lot of accommodation options, and you can filter them by different criteria—from cheapest to most expensive or vice versa, or other filters. Otherwise, for me, Couchsurfing is always my first choice, but you often have to send several requests since people don’t always respond. That said, you can sometimes make amazing connections!

Thanks for your reply.
Yeah, I’d aim more for Zapotitlán—La Cabaña is way too expensive—and I’ve seen a few hotels, but Booking doesn’t list them. Still can’t figure out how to contact them though. 😕

Thanks for your reply!
Yeah, I checked Booking—can’t avoid it 😅—but it only shows me La Cabaña.
There are actually several hotels, but I can’t contact them unless I call, which is a bit intimidating with my limited Spanish!
Hostelworld doesn’t have anything either.
I’ll keep looking...

I just wanted to thank you for encouraging me to explore the area around San Juan Raya. I took the bus there, found a hotel in Zapotitlán (via WhatsApp), and spent three amazing days between the botanical garden, salt flats, and the San Juan reserve. So many great interactions—I got lots of help finding a *collectivo*!—passionate guides, and breathtaking landscapes!
Thrilled with this detour, which became one of the best memories of my month-long trip to Mexico. I loved it so much!
Thanks again! !

Hi Sylvie!
I’m so glad you came back enchanted by your walk in Zapotitlán Salinas and San Juan Raya—you’ll definitely have unforgettable memories from there. And thank *you* for your thank-you message! I’m here if you’re planning another trip to Mexico: there are still plenty of quiet spots left to discover!

Warm regards,
Jean
I’m sending you a photo of the dinosaur footprints, in case you didn’t see them (in San Juan Raya)
