Exploring eastern Morocco: where to land?

Good evening Murielle, why do you say you have to arrive and leave from the same airport?
You can easily arrive via Marrakech and leave via Tangier or any other airport.
Of course, it costs more, but it can be practical to avoid traveling the same uninteresting route twice.
Hello,
Obviously, you can land at one airport and leave from another (and there’s no extra cost in terms of the flight price).
However, car rental companies charge a lot for dropping off the rental car in a city that isn’t the original rental agency’s location.
That’s why I suggested Fès—it eliminates this issue while still allowing you to do a loop, with a good portion in the Oriental region.
Just to clarify: in Morocco, as often mentioned on this forum (and elsewhere), it’s highly recommended to use local agencies rather than international chains.
But it’s true that you should first ask the car rental company. If they have an agency in both the arrival and departure cities, the cost of transferring the car will be lower.
Murielle

Hence my idea of Fès, which eliminates this problem and still allows for a loop, with a good portion in the Oriental region.
It’s definitely the best compromise.
From Marrakech, it’s also possible, but the route would be very long. Plus, the post’s author has already visited much of the Atlas.
From Oujda, circuits are possible too, but the direct road from Oujda to Figuig is really monotonous—there’s not much to see unless you detour off that route?

Hi Murielle,
obviously, arrival and departure can be from different airports without extra cost, but when I tried to clarify my message last night, it wasn’t possible.
I did mean renting a car in Marrakech and returning it in Tangier, which does incur an extra cost but can save you from retracing a route that’s not very interesting or too time-consuming.
In May/June 2026, we rented from Médloc, picked up the car in Marrakech, and returned it three weeks later in Tangier.
The extra cost to return it in Casablanca was 70 €, in Rabat it was 90 €, and in Tangier it was 160 €.
Since I’m not familiar with this region of Morocco, I won’t comment on whether one route is more interesting than another—just on the feasibility of returning the car elsewhere.
Happy travels to everyone.

Yes, but that’s Medloc, and you’re talking about highly touristy cities. Medloc has several agencies across the country (Marrakech and the northwest).
I’d be surprised if Oujda were served by an agency of that caliber.

Oujda-Angads is a major and extremely well-connected entry point to the region (just 15 km from the capital), but you also have Nador-Al Aroui if you want to focus part of your trip on the coast, the Marchica lagoon, and the eastern Rif mountains.

That sounds like AI...

If, in your eyes, demonstrating analytical skills or daring to use formal communication must automatically be deemed insincere, I truly feel sorry for you. This baseless accusation often says much more about the intellectual emptiness of the person making it than about its intended target, but so be it.

A funny way to synthesize things!
For me, it's just copying.
Do you know this region of Morocco well?

I'm having fun :-)
I'm comparing your messages today (Casamance, Quebec, Morocco) with the answers AI gives when you ask it the same questions as internet users....

The internet's concierge has struck again with its arbitrary projections. Of course I know it—I have *pieds-noirs* from Oujda in my circle.

Yes, the data is essentially consensual, so it makes sense there’s agreement—though it’s not identical, of course. ;-)

Yes, I know all these places I’ve talked about—have you ever done a road trip before?

Unbeatable argument!🙁
