Gran Canaria... a trip that wasn't really exciting

Christelle, let's be honest, you'll never get tired of going far away—it's not in your DNA πππ

Hi Isabelle,
It's true, the weather is really important—more or less depending on the person and the activities they enjoy.
And also depending on how interesting the destination is, which won’t be the same for everyone (when I went to Tanzania, it rained, it was often gray... but my interest in safaris meant I still kept an excellent memory of that trip).
For photos in the rain, I’ll refer you to AgnΓ¨s’s travel journal—π

Hi Marie
And the Canary Islands are so much more than just landscapes—it’s a very rich culture, very different from the rest of Spain,
I would’ve loved to learn more about that culture (though honestly, I’m more drawn to landscapes than culture… which doesn’t mean I’m not interested in the history and civilization of the countries I visit ;)).
But that’s actually one of the things that frustrated me—sites were closed or not signposted.
Also, Maspalomas is world-famous for its gay nudist beach. Muriel doesn’t mention it, but you’ll stumble upon it easily while casually strolling along the beach.
I didn’t mention it because we didn’t see it :o!
We walked along the beach on the pedestrian promenade on the way there (too early?), but then, since access to the dunes was nearly impossible from the beach, we turned off and left that beach. So if it was further along…

Hello Christelle
when we’re older and tired of going far 😄.
That’s exactly what I used to think when I was younger... and I’m not far from feeling the same way now π
I’m not (yet?) tired of far-off destinations, but I choose them thinking, "This time, I *really* want to go there," and I’ve dropped some I’d considered because they were too far, too complicated, or too rough. But I’m definitely less adventurous than you on that front π

At the same time, chilling in the dunes in flip-flops with the weather you’re describing… ;)

Hmm, the way you keep bringing it up, I’m starting to wonder if there’s some repressed fantasy going on

I didn’t see any more nudists than you did in Maspalomas.
Like Kate said, you’d have to be *really* motivated to strip off in barely 15Β°C with a pretty glacial wind.
Though the Nordics are used to both nudity and the cold...
It’s funny—VF doesn’t have a Travel LGBTQIA+ section *or* a naturist travel section.
An idea worth exploring?

It's funny there's neither an LGBTQIA+ Travel nor a Naturist Travel section on VF.
An idea to explore?
For naturists, there must be specialized sites.
For LGBTQIA+ travelers, why would they travel differently from us and need specific sections?

Sure, for naturists, but since this site is general, why exclude them?
For LGBTQIA folks, why would they travel differently from us and need specific sections?
Because they’re far from welcome everywhere.
In some countries, they even risk the death penalty.
Plus, there’s a section for women.
(Though there isn’t one for men...)

Uh... I’m not harping on about it any more than that—I was just responding to the first two sentences, which weren’t even mine π
If I wanted to indulge that kind of fantasy, I’d remind you that I live in BΓ©ziers and Cap d’Agde isn’t far... There are dunes, gay folks, and nude beaches there π

I won’t pile on because we’re already raining on Muriel’s travel journal (sorry π), but some people told me that... π

True, the travel journal is done and I haven’t thanked you for the feedback yet. Well, in the end, maybe the Canary Islands won’t be thanking you either, given how unenthusiastic your review is...
Personally, I had the chance to spend a week in Tenerife a few years ago, but it was "with the gang," and I’ll admit that bars and nightclubs interested us more than the surrounding nature. That said, I did enjoy climbing Mount Teide and the contrast between the west and east coasts.
All that to say, your combined feedback with AgnΓ¨s hasn’t exactly convinced me to go wander around there with my sneakers...

This travel journal isn’t about the Canary Islands in general, just Gran Canaria. π
your combined and simultaneous feedback with Agnès
My review isn’t finished yet. Maybe El Hierro will win you over! π

For a while now, we've had the Seychelles, Mauritius, and now Gran Canaria (and not the Canary Islands, silly me 😇), and I have to admit that none of these travel journals have made me want to be a Robinson Crusoe...
Maybe it's my inner mountain lover...
I’ll still give El Hierro a chance ππ
