never a knife at the table
Same in Kyrgyzstan! π€ͺ
We only had to deal with it once or twice.
gold teeth for everyone as an outward sign of wealth...
I also noticed that charming detail when I met Uzbeks in Osh. π
Did the women talk to you?
The only Uzbek women I spoke to only addressed me, never speaking to or looking at my companion ????
Yes, the Uzbek women did talk to me. I didn’t sense any reluctance on that front. However, during our discussions with the group of young people near the river, we definitely felt that relationships between men and women in Uzbekistan were... special...

Thanks for this lovely travel journal and, more generally, for everything you’ve been posting lately.
You made me regret—even more—our rushed departure from the Silk Road before we got to see Bukhara and especially Samarkand.
Keep treating us, please!

Thanks Franck for this travel journal that’s bumped a destination I’ve often talked about (but never actually visited) to the top of my list—just like Puglia! π

Two different destinations, but both are worth visiting...

For Puglia, it was done in May... now just Uzbekistan left to plan ;)

Both destinations, though different, are definitely worth a little visit!

Thanks Franck for this travel journal. I loved the photos, but even more so the comments.
I took notes even though it’ll be impossible for us to visit this country for two weeks... unless we wait until retirement, and that’s a hard no.
Thanks again for sharing.

Thank youuuu for this travel journal. As always, a delight to read.
I can't wait to pack my bags and discover this magnificent country.
In the meantime, I'm off to check out the Egyptian journal!

Hey, what’s the issue with two weeks?

Hi, what’s the issue with these two weeks?
The number of vacation days my husband can take outside of July and August ☹️

Franck,
I haven’t even finished the Namibia travel journal and there are already more: Lithuania, Egypt!! I can’t keep up!
Well, it’s official: Uzbekistan in April 2027.
Quick question: did you use a paper guidebook before leaving, or is it easy to get around the cities once you're there?

It’s awesome that you’ve taken the plunge—you won’t regret it. That said, two weeks there is a long time if you don’t venture off the beaten path a bit, like we tried to do. For Uzbekistan and all our other adventures, we never bring paper guidebooks. Reading blogs and watching vlogs are my favorite pastimes π

Thanks for your feedback.
To save time, we’ll land at Urgench Airport (31 km from Khiva) and leave from Samarkand. So in the end, we won’t spend much time on trains to "optimize" the time spent in the cities.

So your trip will be limited to Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand?
Those are obviously the three main highlights...
Or did you plan to explore a bit around the area?

About getaways outside cities, I think you mentioned possibly stopping by Tajikistan (where the landscapes still seem way more appealing than in Uzbekistan).
Was there a reason you didn’t end up going?

Yeah, just the desire to dedicate an entire trip to that country—it seems worth it! We’d planned to spend 2 days in Tajikistan. After digging deeper, we realized 6 days would be better... And then we decided not to go at all this time so we could spend 2 to 3 full weeks there later, maybe even with our own vehicle as part of our future round-the-world trip...

Thanks for your reply.
As for me, no world trip planned or even a trip to Tajikistan for now, but I’ll keep this option in mind to add to the Uzbek cities π

As far as I'm concerned, no world tour planned or even a trip just to Tajikistan for now, so I’ll keep this option in mind to add to the Uzbek cities π
Here’s what I’d noted for a 2-day trip:
- Seven Lakes starting from Penjikent (no visa, easy border crossing) – Haft Kul (the Seven Lakes).
- Iskandarkul

I’d planned 3 days for the Seven Lakes and Iskandarkul (we travel at a slower pace than you guys π).
