Off on a trip to Uzbekistan!

I’d told myself 3 days for the Seven Lakes and Iskanderkul (we travel at a slower pace than you 😏).
Are you doubling back to Samarkand or taking the route to Dushanbe to get back to Tashkent?

I'm not there yet!
Potentially late September 2027... but maybe also spring or autumn 2028.
I'm starting to gather info on "outside the cities" (for cities, no problem finding info 😎).
I'd only considered the option starting from Samarkand (possibly through an agency for that part), but I haven't looked into it yet.
Just like opting for a Bukhara-Samarkand route via the areas (mountains) around Lake Aydar.
We'll see how to fit that into 2 weeks 😉

Hi Franck,
Thank you for the quality of your travel journal—I really appreciate the tone and humor of your writing, as well as the photos. Your enthusiasm confirms that this is a destination not to be missed, and I’m seriously considering Uzbekistan for my trip in April!
I have a question about budgeting and planning. I’d prefer to stay in youth hostels or guesthouses, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to just show up on the spot rather than booking in advance through a comparator site that takes commissions. Is that risky in terms of accommodation availability? From your journal, it doesn’t seem like there are crowds of tourists at that time… I’m still unsure if I’ll be traveling solo or with someone—do you know if there are dorm-style accommodations, or only private rooms? And in that case, how much should I budget per night roughly?
Wishing you a great day, and I’ll soon get back to reading your Egypt travel journal!

Hello Franck,
Thank you so much for the quality of your travel journal—I really appreciate the tone and humor of your writing, as well as the photos. Your enthusiasm confirms that this is a destination not to be missed! For my next trip in April, I’m seriously considering Uzbekistan.
I have a question about budgeting and planning. I’d prefer to stay in youth hostels or guesthouses, and I’m wondering if it’s possible to book directly on-site rather than through a comparison site that takes commissions. Is there a risk (in terms of availability) of showing up without a reservation? Based on your journal, it doesn’t seem like there are crowds of tourists at that time… I’m still unsure if I’ll be traveling solo or with someone—do you know if hostels offer dorms, or are there only private rooms? In that case, how much should I budget per night?
Wishing you a great day, and I’ll soon get back to reading your Egypt journal!
Hi,
We only booked our first night in Tashkent. For the rest, we decided last-minute and never had any issues finding budget accommodations—always simple but clean and with breakfast. I was looking for double rooms, but I think you’ll have no problem finding dorms…
Thanks for the kind comment, and see you on my Egypt journal, which is wrapping up soon…
Franck

Thanks again for your replies—I’ll probably do a mix of booking in advance and on the spot. Tonight, I just spent a few hours comparing tons of flights to find the cheapest and most convenient combo, trying to factor in my constraints, and I still can’t decide, haha!
Anyway, I hope you have amazing adventures ahead!

This travel journal is great! (As always.) And some ideas for heading to the countryside. That’s lovely.

Help yourself, it’s free
For info on the Uzbek countryside, it’s true there’s not much online. We really struggled to find things to do!
