Accept PMs from Franky

Great minds think alike, it's infallible. For the rest, during this period of "national mourning," the faint echoes from the few Thais I know describe their daily life as "normal"—restaurants, boozy evenings, T-shirts in the colors of their favorite League I club, and lakorn-TV included. At least in the rare households of this "brutish" people equipped with electricity, screens, and internet. As it turns out, after paying the expected tribute to the passing of a historic figure, time hasn’t completely stopped. Its inhabitants aren’t all prostrate in tears, and it even seems that Thai life is driven by motivations and dynamics beyond the sole prescriptions instilled in them from birth. To such an extent that it seems utterly strange, but some of them didn’t wait for the first orders from the regent—or even those from Bhumibol’s successor—to know what they had to do. In fact, it’s even possible they think (crazy, right!) like people in many countries on the planet: not expecting anything from their so-called elites or a supposed political system change to improve their lot. On the other hand, I don’t have any Buddhist Thai friends who speak Latin (taught, unless I’m mistaken, at Chulalongkorn). Any translation ideas?๐Ÿคช

So accept Franky's PMs

Great minds think alike, it's infallible.

When you quote someone, you need the whole thing...

In full, it goes like this:

"Great minds think alike, and small minds talk about it."

The one I prefer is: "Speech (or writing) is silver, but silence is golden." ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

It'd be great if you could put that into practice...๐Ÿ˜Ž

When quoting someone, the quote should be complete...

In full, it reads as follows:

" Great minds think alike, and small minds talk about it "

LOL๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

great minds think alike "This expression dates back to the 19th century and comes from a letter Voltaire wrote to one of his many correspondents. Its original form was 'beautiful minds think alike.' Today, it has undergone a slight change but retains the same meaning with a touch of humor." HERE

Don’t waste your time: he was more into delivering letters than studying them. And quoting (or misquoting) Voltaire—a staunch monarchist—in this case is just laughable.๐Ÿ˜›

Voltaire, monarchist convinced

You're kidding, right??? (Go on, scoot over to Wikipedia ๐Ÿ˜).

I find locals' opinions far more relevant than those of hipsters or lefties

The ultimate insult... when you've run out of arguments. Seriously, we should invent a "Godwin point" equivalent specifically for using this phrase (already cheesy, even outdated, by the way) on forums...๐Ÿ˜

Should we condemn or mock an entire people because of their rulers?

I haven’t condemned or mocked any population—I simply pointed out the disastrous consequences of the actions of an archaic (and, I’ll add, manipulative to the extreme) monarchy and, of course, its allies.

Voltaire, staunch monarchist

You're joking, right???

Only with my friends. If your knowledge of Voltaire stops at his Boulevard, I get the rest.๐Ÿ˜Ž

The ultimate insult

I’m not sure about the word “insult,” and even less about “ultimate,” but it still cracks me up to see armchair revolutionaries reinventing the world without considering cultural differences or understanding the daily realities of the people whose domestic policies they denounce with such indignation.

For the record, Voltaire didn’t see democracy as an ideal—only a monarchical government could suit “large” countries. He admired the English parliamentary monarchy and praised Henry VI (see *La Henriade*—no Wikipedia, just a few lingering memories from my literature studies and the recollection of an excellent French teacher).

For info, Voltaire didn’t consider democracy an ideal; only a monarchic government could suit "great" countries. He admired the English parliamentary monarchy and praised Henry VI (see "La Henriade"—no Wikipedia, just remnants of my literary studies and the memory of an excellent French teacher).

Personally, since my studies chased me and I never caught up, Voltaire mostly reminds me of my commute when I was a slave to Paris starting in April '68. When I see what the armchair revolutionaries of that era have become, it stings a little. On the other hand, popular culture often speaks to me, including certain quotes like this one (J. Brel): They destroyed the Bastille And it didn’t change a thing They destroyed the Bastille When what we needed was love

Back to the topic—still in the realm of the popular—knowing Thai people lets you constantly discover new aspects of the culture. My sweetheart just explained a funeral rite I wasn’t familiar with: The son combs his deceased father’s hair to give him a good appearance for the living who come to pay their last respects And then, he breaks the comb in two because where his father is going, only inner beauty matters

Another little off-topic post (my incorrigible curiosity about differences) I’m hesitating to order this novel: In Laos, the Silent Repression by Anne-Sophie Gindroz http://www.gavroche-thailande.com/actualites/livres/105388-en-vente-ici-au-laos-la-repression-silencieuse-de-anne-sophie-gindroz

fractured communities

As a specialist on Laos and its minority groups, If you’ve read it, what do you think? Would you recommend it?

Have you experienced this reality yourselves? Unless you’ve already mentioned it in your travel journals, I admit I haven’t read everything yet

Hey everyone!

In Thailand, protests against the monarchy were unthinkable two years ago They are more openly and directly critical of the monarchy than their elders, the "Red Shirts" of 2010—who support them. Thai students have reignited a movement against the current political system and its values. "]Interview with researcher Eugรฉnie Merieau.
