Hello

Many consider us marriage dinosaurs—do you feel the same?

Congratulations, anyway!

We barely saw any animals on our last trip, so lucky you—you’re racking them up!

It’s in Yellowstone that we toasted to celebrate our 41 years of marriage.

Happy iron anniversary!

And cute, that big teddy bear...

Yep, some folks don’t get lucky enough to spot a bear in Yellowstone... or on any trip, for that matter! It was probably there to celebrate your wedding anniversary ๐Ÿ˜ Happy anniversary, by the way! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello! ๐Ÿ™‚

MM: Part of this road will be closed next year, but you’ll still be able to reach Canyon Village via another route and visit Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon without any issues.

Gilles: It’s true that 41 years of marriage isn’t too common these days—we even call ourselves the Dinosaurs!

Masterpro: I hadn’t looked into it, so thanks for the info!

Carlinette, Peggy, and Yves—thank you for your well-wishes!

Day 9, September 10. Cooke City - Gardiner Yellowstone Riverside cottage . Gardiner 193 € for 2 people, no breakfast Very small room with a microwave and refrigerator. No table. At this price, we didn’t have a river view, but the hotel is quiet. Only advantages: not too far from the town center and, above all, a supermarket just 5 minutes away on foot First lovely surprise when opening the shutters: this bison calmly grazing right under our windows

7:50 AM. We’re in the car. The sky is completely gray, and it’s 3ยฐC. Thankfully, this cold-bottomed person packed fleece-lined leggings to wear under my hiking pants and thermal undershirts. They’ll come in handy in Yellowstone. We drive through the lovely Lamar Valley again with great pleasure, where we’re lucky enough to spot this moose (thanks, Jean Franรงois), also busy eating among the small silvery bushes on the hillside.

At Tower Junction, we take the road to the petrified tree (or what’s left of it), fortunately well protected to prevent damage.

The visit is quick, and we’re back on the road. Barely 10 minutes later, DD shouts: “A bear, a bear!!!” Just as we park to get a better photo, a huge truck passes us with a deafening noise, scaring the bear off as it runs up the hill at full speed.

Even though we’re annoyed at the truck, we’re thrilled by this fleeting encounter. Mount Washburn, Dunraven Pass—we keep our eyes peeled because I’d read that bears are often spotted in this area. We arrive at Canyon Village at 10 AM. In my itinerary, after our night in Cooke City, I’d planned to visit the south rim of the canyon (which should be done in the morning for the best light). Unfortunately, the sky is uniformly gray, and I start adjusting my plans. We’ll save the south rim of the Grand Canyon for another day, and instead of stopping at Norris before heading to Mammoth, we head straight to West Thumb. We’re amazed by how wide the Yellowstone River is in some places.

More cars stopped along the road. Cages on pickup trucks—what’s inside? Rangers take out four swans.

Another stroke of luck!!! We get to witness the release of four magnificent swans in front of a few geese and a bunch of admiring tourists.

A few flaps of their wings, a little glide on the river, and off they go—freedom!

Hayden Valley How beautiful this valley is. Once again, the concept of wild nature takes on its full meaning. The Yellowstone River flows peacefully, making large loops through the preserved prairies with those mountains in the background. Its beauty is striking. It’s calm, peaceful—magical, in a word! I love these ones

Sulfur Caldron Here we are! We’d seen a few fumaroles the day before, but now we’re right in the middle of it!! And it spurts, it boils, it smokes, it gushes, it rumbles, it blows!!!!

We’re right above the devil’s cauldron! The sounds and smells mix together. You can feel the breath of Yellowstone!!! We’ll get this same sensation of the volcano breathing every time we linger in front of a bubbling mud or water pool. As soon as we step out of the car, a nauseating smell takes over because of the sulfurous gases escaping from this mix of clay and water from the most acidic springs in Yellowstone. These steaming, bubbling mud pools are right below the small parking lot, and we can safely observe them.

Mud Volcano Area How pleasant this little loop of barely 1 km on the boardwalks is! Unlike the all-white, barren mud pots we just left, this area is colorful and lush with vegetation!!! We're amazed by the plants that manage to survive despite the acidity. There's grass, pine trees, bison grazing in the distance, and small pools surrounded by marsh plants.

The lovely colors of the little water streams!!!

Dragon’s Mouth Spring It’s easy to imagine the dragon roaring when you hear the noise made by the burst of steam coming out.

After visiting the Dragon, we take the loop clockwise. Mud Volcano Mud Caldron

Mud Geyser

As we climb, we discover beautiful views down below on the other side of the road around the Yellowstone River. And we’re flown over by a flock of wild geese! It’s a feast for the eyes!

Churning Caldron

Black Dragon Caldron

Sour Lake

We’re heading back down to the parking lot when suddenly we hear a deafening noise and see a stampede of bison crossing the boardwalks right in front of us!!!

What luck again!!! That’s what you call being in the right place at the right time!!! Just a few minutes earlier or later, and we would’ve missed this amazing spectacle of bison galloping in single file at full speed.

Hi there, sorry to contradict you again, but you were really lucky: it was a moose (or elk) that you saw!!! The animal is pretty discreet; we didn’t have that opportunity... Looking forward to the rest of your adventures. Christelle

I'll fix it right away!!! Martine!! ๐Ÿ™‚ After a reminder from our friend Yves, I want to give credit where it's due—thanks Christelle for this correction ๐Ÿ˜‰

No worries, the account is under Jean-Franรงois’ name! But we’re traveling as a pair (or a group of 4 with the kids...) and I’m the one reading the forum more than he is these days... Christelle

We barely took an hour to visit the two sites. The sky is gray again. We follow the lake, deliberately skipping the Lake Village and Bridge Bay areas. This lake is huge, and we can see some pretty tall peaks in the distance on the other side of the shore. We drive through miles of scorched forests. Thankfully, we can see small fir trees through the bare trunks reaching toward the sky. It’s a sign that life is returning. West Thumb After the fumaroles and mud pots, another really pretty spot for our first real encounter with geysers and deep pools with beautiful colors, surrounded by fir trees and with the proximity of this immense lake adding to the beauty of the place.

We take boardwalks to cross the basin and safely reach the edge of the lake. The place is surprising with its volcanic areas bubbling underwater and the lake in the background. This easy loop, done in just about an hour, showcases all the geothermal phenomena of the park. Thumb paint pots

Blue Bell pot A small geyser right in the water. It steams, it gurgles—we love it!

Abyss Pool It looks dull without the sun.

The thermophilic bacteria give us incredible colors, and we can follow the path of the water gently trickling toward the lake.

Despite the gray sky muting the colors, we really loved this little bucolic spot. With some sunshine, it must be stunning!

To try and keep the discovery of Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic in the sunlight intact, we take the same route back to Gardiner. We cross the prairies of Hayden Valley and its bison again with pleasure.

We turn off toward Norris at Canyon Village with our next goal being Artist’s Paint Pots. This little walk of just over 1.5 km starts with a flat trail through the pine trees and will take us, after a few stairs and some climbs, to a spot with a lovely panoramic view of the site.

Then to a field of impressive mud pots.

As soon as we leave the trees, steam is everywhere, and it’s smoking on all sides. The sulfur smell is there, and we take our little cure to heal our lungs and noses.

The Blood Geyser and the Flash Spring bubble, steam, and erupt. Blood Geyser Flash Spring

Once again, the lack of sun prevents the colors from blazing, but as we reach the top, a break in the clouds arrives, and we can enjoy this lovely view. We continue toward the mud pools where gas bubbles burst noisily!!

Blop, blop!!! They create astonishingly tall white formations. No animals except this little robin, but honestly, we’ve been really lucky on that front.

With the sun, the opalescent pools light up in their red setting!!!! And with the light returning, we appreciate the contrast between the green of the pines, the golden yellow of the grasses, and the blue-green of the little pools against a backdrop of fumaroles. We get back in the car, delighted with our little adventure. A quick photo stop at the lake and its steam.

The sun has disappeared again!!! Darn, it’s not gonna be great for the terraces in Mammoth.

Hi Martine, I had fun marking all your great finds on the map along the route from Rapid City to Yellowstone—these’ll be perfect for us to explore the area following in your footsteps. Great stuff, thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚ With just a kilometer or two difference, we’ll have seen the bear in the same spot—unforgettable! Yellowstone was awesome; you guys took it step by step, starting with the modest Sulphur Caldron, Mud Volcano, and, to a lesser extent, West Thumb. By adjusting your plans to enjoy the Canyon in the sunshine, you had one heck of a road-trip day, covering the entire "8" shape of Yellowstone’s roads from one end to the other! Well done! Guillaume
