Good news for tourists traveling this route. The 59 km section in poor condition is currently being repaired. Everything should be finished in August.

This will make the connection between Guantánamo, Baracoa, Moa, and Holguín much easier.

Great news! It’s about time this happened. Where did you get this information?

There’ll still be some nostalgia for cycle tourists who managed to ride this road—either as it is now or as it was—since parts of it were in such rough shape, forcing us to weave between potholes and cracks and sometimes even hop off the bike to walk alongside it.

My friends from Baracoa told me about it.

Every year I joke with them about the road repairs. This time they were quick to let me know—the last section is underway!

Here’s some good news. Thanks for the update! It’s a mixed blessing, depending on who you ask. One thing’s for sure—Baracoa will become more touristy once this road is paved.

Yes, you're right, especially since the direct Viazul connection Havana / Holguin Baracoa / Maisi is still on the agenda. For my Cuban friends in Baracoa, this is great news—the casas rarely fill up due to the remoteness and the road conditions, except in July and August. But you still have to keep in mind that many travelers only stay for 15 days, and the distance from the capital remains significant. Maybe not so much for Canadians, though, who arrive in Holguin.

Info for anyone planning to travel between Moa and Baracoa. I went back in January 2023. We thought the road would have been paved and in good condition—it was the plan. Unfortunately, only very short sections were asphalted. The first 21 km after Moa are paved. After that, the road deteriorates with potholes, rough gravel, and cracked asphalt. At 59 km, there’s a short paved section. The road is in poor shape after the entrance checkpoint of Humboldt National Park. The Covid pandemic and Cuba’s disastrous economic situation have delayed the road paving project indefinitely.
