Choosing between Krabi and Phuket

just one question for February—should I pick Phuket or Krabi?

First off, hello,

Look, we’re not psychic here. Your question’s like: red shorts or green shorts? You get what I mean, right?

Hi there, I was just wondering which is the best place to go with family in February.

Phuket is an island with 2 or 3 beaches that are really overrun by tourism. But some people like that. The rest of the island is actually pretty quiet.

Krabi is a coastal town that mainly serves as a base for heading out to some islands or inland.

Yeah, yeah, I get it—I’ve already been to Phuket once before. I phrased the question badly. Actually, I wanted to know if Krabi is better for enjoying the islands and beaches in peace.

For peace and quiet, I definitely wouldn’t pick December, January, or February.

But Krabi, yes—it’s quieter than Phuket City or Ao Nang, which is just below Krabi.

Ao Nang, though, is right by the beach and better for trips to the islands. Something to consider for you.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I know February isn’t exactly quiet, but that’s the only time I can go. After that, it’s for our son’s 18th birthday and, most importantly, school holidays. Okay, okay, I thought Ao Nang was nice. I’ll take a closer look at it.

Hello,

Just so you know, Ao Nang’s beach isn’t great—it’s not really swimmable.

You’ll want to take a shuttle to Railay; it’s quick and cheap, and the beach is beautiful.

Hi, okay, thanks for the info

Yeah, Railay is that iconic image with the limestone cliffs that climbers love.

Ao Nang, near the beach, is still pretty touristy with touts in front of tailors and restaurants.

From the beach, you can see islands you can visit. Nice vibe on the beach at sunset.

Hi there, Thanks—I saw online that Kata, Kamala, or Karon have some nice places to stay, and they seem pretty good, but I’m not sure after that.

The last beaches you mention are in Phuket—it’s not at all in the same place.

hi Yeah, yeah, I know, but I'm torn between Krabi and Phuket. It seems kinda complicated!

If you wanna feel like you're in a French city, head to Phuket. If you wanna feel a bit more like you're in Thailand, head to Krabi.

I suggest splitting your time—half in Ao Nang and half in Phuket. Everyone will be happy to see more of the country.

thanks for the info it's true that I prefer going where it's a bit more local but from what you're saying, Krabi has fewer French people

Wow, it's been ages since I last went to Thailand—I'm basing this on what friends who’ve been there recently say. Anyway, Phuket is *definitely* overrun with French tourists, who, by the way, aren’t doing much for the overall image of the French in Thailand (go figure).

But I think Krabi isn’t as "Frenchified" as Phuket... Though we’d need some recent firsthand accounts from people who’ve been there to be sure.

Either way, Thailand is *super* trendy as a travel destination for us French folks.

Back in the 2010s, I was already recommending the Philippines to people who wanted something spectacular and budget-friendly.

All you have to do is search this forum (top right of the blue banner at the top of the page, in Search). There, you’ll see that there are 2 or 3 beaches in Phuket, as well as the city center, that are too touristy. But as soon as you move a few hundred meters away, you’re in a much calmer Thailand. And it’s a big island.

Hi there,

Phuket if you're looking for a super crowded and relatively expensive beach resort. Personally, I really don’t like it at all—you see some awful behavior in certain areas.

Krabi’s nicer, with a more relaxed vibe. The town itself isn’t much, but there are a few globetrotters hanging around. You’ll want to explore the coastal areas and inland spots by scooter.

If you skip Phuket, you’ll survive 😄.

Good luck with your choice!

Krabi or Phuket—both are really popular with tourists. The upside of Krabi is that it’s a perfect jumping-off point for trips to islands that are way less crowded. Phuket has quiet spots too, but you’ve gotta hunt for them, usually by heading further north on the island. In Krabi, if you wander away from the main street and the beach where the boats leave, it’s a lot more peaceful. That said, in February, it’s tough to completely avoid other tourists!

For the past two years, you should know that Thailand has become a refuge for a whole diaspora of Russians seeking peace. As a result, Phuket is really crowded between December and March. Crowded means there are traffic jams on the roads from south to north, and beaches like in Phuket Town, for example. The beaches are where people spend the day, and Phuket Town is where most of the best Thai restaurants on the island are. Makes sense since that’s where most Thais live, as elsewhere is way too expensive. That said, there are some real gems for food 😛

As for Krabi, I don’t know much—I went there in 2014 around Tonsai Beach, and it was amazing. But back then, it wasn’t yet overrun by Russians.

Just to clarify, Phuket is now packed from December to November. Driving is a nightmare, but scooters/motorcycles are doable—except on rainy days.
