4x4 trails to explore in Tunisia?

We’re in the planning stages and wondering if there are any great 4x4 trails in Tunisia. Ideally, we’d love to find spots that are really off the beaten path and wild. We’re also curious if it’s possible to sleep under the stars in our 4x4 in safe and scenic spots.

Hi, there are lots of options in Tunisia... but you need to be careful depending on the areas you're considering. The sand, traveling with multiple vehicles... the chotts—don’t venture in if there’s been heavy rain in the previous days. Hi! Starting from Douz, you’ve got the beginning of the Grand Erg Oriental, with some really great trails but they’re tough for beginners. You can only go into the desert between October and May, because in summer it’s impassable and way too hot. To enter the desert, you’ll need permits from the authorities.

Alternatively, you can go through an agency that can arrange a Saharan guide and the desert permits for you. I know one—Grand Sahara Aventures, based in Djerba.

Anyway, lots of Italians come to play in the desert with the latest 4x4s and get guided. You can even go as far as Lac Houidath Erreched at the very end of the Tunisian desert, but you’ve really got to be experienced for that kind of trip.

Thanks for the link. A few years back, I had the crazy idea to walk from Douz to Djebil—about 30-40 km on foot. I stumbled upon a huge doline several meters deep completely by accident. Has anyone been there before? It was located at bearing 190-200 from Douz. Anyway, lucky I wasn’t walking at night, or I would’ve fallen right in.

Hi Matthews, as mentioned in my post, desert permits need to be requested from the police station and are paid for. The best option is to go through an agency, but I’d really advise against heading out without a guide—there are plenty of traps in the desert. I’ve seen convoys of 4x4s stuck in the sand for days trying to get out.
