Euros or dollars in Guatemala?

Gaiatika · 2024-10-24

Hi everyone, We’re heading to Guatemala in a few days, and the most recent posts are starting to get a bit old... Would anyone have more up-to-date info on whether it’s better to exchange euros rather than dollars? Do we still need crisp bills no matter the currency? Thanks, and great to be back on VF! !

Hello,

Guatemala is in the Americas. As a general rule, the preferred currency on the continent is the dollar. It's best to use recent bills that aren't too worn out.

Yes, dollars without a doubt. In good condition and small denominations.

Hi, We just got back from Argentina where the dollar/peso exchange rate is much better with large bills (especially $100 bills). However, if you want to pay directly in dollars, keep in mind that you’ll get your change back in the local currency at a poor rate... I’m planning to go to Guatemala for a month in January/February and hope to have a chance to read your travel journal before I leave 😊... Happy travels
