Your itinerary ideas for 12 nights in Thailand

Hi everyone, I know my post might sound a bit repetitive with the questions asked regularly on this forum, but I’m feeling a little lost and thought I’d still ask for your help. Here’s my situation: I’m traveling to Thailand with my wife and 12-year-old son during the February 2025 school holidays. We’ll be spending 12 nights in the country. So far, I only have our flight tickets to and from Phuket. Now, I need to plan an itinerary that lets us discover beautiful places and the culture of this country. I’d like to stay by the sea, with stunning fine-sand beaches and breathtaking landscapes in areas that aren’t too urban, but also be able to see some beautiful monuments, typical villages, and wildlife not too far away. That said, I don’t want to be lost deep in the jungle either—I’d like a bit of atmosphere in the evenings (no nightclubs, but rather nice bars with music). I’ve done some research and here’s a first draft of what I might do:

Spend my first 3 nights in the suburbs of Phuket to explore the city and the province more broadly, Then head to Ko Yao Noi for 2 nights to discover the charms of Phang Nga Bay, Next, fly from Krabi to spend 4 nights on Koh Samui (maybe with a little excursion to Ko Pha Ngan?), Then fly back to Krabi to reach Koh Phi Phi for 2 nights, Finally, return to the Phuket area for my last night in Thailand to be close for my flight the next day.

The idea is to explore several places without having to pack and unpack every day, and to avoid spending hours on transport every day. What do you think? Do the places seem relevant? If so, does the number of nights seem appropriate? Thanks in advance for your help, Best regards, Lionel

I’m afraid you’re confusing a forum with a travel agency that, for a fee, will prepare a custom trip for you.

With Phuket and Samui, you can at least be sure you’ll see lots of people—especially our cheerful French folks from the suburbs and Russians.

Culture, nature, monuments: I think you’d need at least a full year of vacation to even scratch the surface of what this country has to offer. Especially outside the places you’ve chosen.

I’m not sure what you mean by "typical villages," but we’re now in the 21st century. Everyone has a cell phone and a brand-new pickup truck bought on credit. They’re the ones moving toward progress, while we’re the ones starting to return to the jungle. The "typical villages" they’ll offer to show you, especially in the north, are basically human zoos that provide cash to the locals.

You’re being a bit too naive thinking you can visit Phangan along the way with just 4 nights in Samui. These are large islands. For a first trip, you can already explore Samui, which has been touristy for longer. Phangan is much quieter, except for the occasional Full Moon party on one of its beaches.

12 nights is barely enough to shake off some fatigue. Enjoy your stay and relax—during the long winter evenings that follow, you’ll find plenty of destinations to explore in Thailand on this forum next time. It’s worth the effort, and you’ll get more out of it than just opinions from others that may not apply to you.

Either hotels or local agencies will happily organize your tours, excursions, transfers, and transportation.

One last thing: it’ll be peak tourist season. If there’s one thing that’s truly urgent, it’s booking your hotels as soon as possible.

Flying from Krabi to Koh Samui isn’t the best idea—it’s only 260 km between the two. There are ferries from Krabi Town to Koh Samui’s Nathon Pier in under 4 hours.

Hello, personally I’d skip Samui to spend more time on Koh Yao instead.

Phi Phi is a tiny island that’s *super* crowded, with streets alternating between restaurants, weed shops, and tattoo parlors… worth knowing before you go so you’re not disappointed by the whole ‘untouched tropical island’ dream.

Hi there, Taking a flight—especially a round-trip—on such a short route isn’t the best idea! I’d skip Samui and Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand and stick to the Andaman Sea side (the water’s generally clearer and there are more snorkeling spots). After Phuket, Phang Nga, and Phi Phi (which was great... before the tourist invasion), I’d head to the islands further south: Koh Lanta, Koh Libong, Koh Muk, Koh Bulon, or Koh Lipe. (You’ll have to make some choices—all the islands are connected by "speed boat.") I’d recommend Koh Lipe—it’s got everything you’re looking for From there, head back to the mainland (Pak Bara) and catch your return flight from Hat Yai or Phuket.

Come on, Léo, cut a newbie some slack! 🤦🏼 We’re not a travel agency, but this is absolutely the place to ask questions and get ideas. I think your message came off a bit harsh and unwelcoming, even if the itinerary *does* seem all over the place. That’s not like you at all, anyway 😄

And if they book the hotels while they still can, that’s something that’ll be priceless, right?

I won’t weigh in on the saying "the longer, the better" 😄

As for hotels, it’s definitely better to have some booked. But you must have tons of tips to share with them, right? 😊

I’m kinda going along with Djalma’s post. Stick to the Indian Ocean side. From Phuket, head north (Koh Payam, Koh Chang) or way south—Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe, Koh Bulon. Or why not just stay in Phuket? It might actually be less touristy that way.

Just keep in mind that 12 days is *super* short! It’d be a shame to waste 3 of them on buses, taxis, flights, etc.

As Denis suggested, I’d stay longer on Ko Yao Noi island. We spent a week there and never got bored. The island pretty much ticks all your boxes (except for monuments).

It’s clear that I’d be better off staying around the Andaman Sea for the 12 nights (luckily, I’ll arrive around noon and leave around midnight, so I’ll still be able to make the most of my arrival and departure days). After digging deeper into this, here are the places that seem interesting and where I’m thinking of staying: Phuket, Ko Yao Noi, Ko Lanta, and Ko Muk. What do you think of these spots? Best, Lionel One more question: Is it risky not to book the ferry connections in advance to have more flexibility once I’m there? (For example, if we really like a place, we could take the boat later in the day, or if we want to move on, we could leave early in the morning to enjoy the next destination more.) Obviously, the hotels will be booked well in advance.

Koh Yao Noi is really nice—I’ve been there twice. It’s just a few minutes by boat from Phuket, and it’s a pretty quiet island that lets you unwind compared to Phuket, which can be a bit more hectic. I’d definitely recommend it.

After digging into the topic, here are the places that seem interesting to me and where I plan to stay: Phuket, Ko Yao Noi, Ko Lanta, and Ko Muk.

I loved Koh Muk, but I realize my opinion is subjective... First, we stayed a little inland on the island, near a beach where you can rent kayaks. We paddled along a rather wild part of the coast with stops for snorkeling in different coves. In one, we had a picnic alone on the sand, and we also got to visit the "Emerald Cave" before the hordes of tourists arrived by boat. We love walking and were able to reach different parts of the island on foot—accessible only by foot or kayak.

Phuket feels way too touristy for me, but as someone mentioned earlier, the island is big, and there must still be some quiet spots.

I also loved Koh Tarutao (a marine park), but it’s probably not what you’re looking for. The island is huge (compared to others in the area) but is really only for those who want a "Robinson Crusoe" experience. It’s a shame because you could easily spend just one night there in the middle of untouched scenery and the rest of your stay on Koh Lipe, for example, where you can dive and snorkel, though it’s much more crowded!

I’m planning to spend 7 nights on the islands (early March). I’d like to enjoy the beaches, spend a day on a boat, visit Phang Nga Bay... I’m neither a party animal nor sporty! I was thinking of spending 3 nights in Ao Nang (as a starting point for excursions) and for the remaining 4 nights, I’m hesitating between Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe, and Ko Yao Noi... What do you think?

I think I found your gorgeous hotel in Ko Yao Noi—is it the Laguna Villa? It’s above my budget... Do you have another more affordable hotel to recommend?

Yes, that’s the one. But prices have gone up quite a bit, unfortunately. I don’t have any other places to recommend. Our trip was some time ago.
