November 2024 Photo Contest: Art Nouveau Around the World

Ragamuffin · 2024-11-01

Hello!

With no authority whatsoever, I’m taking the liberty of relaunching the photo contests on VoyageForum, which is now active and alive again 😉

The theme for November 2024 is Art Nouveau, an artistic and architectural movement (1893 to 1913—just before, well, World War I) that has nothing to do with (or does it?) Art Deco, another artistic and architectural movement (1925 to 1940—right before World War II).

**Participation** Every VF member can submit up to 3 photos, until Monday, November 25 at 11:59 PM Brussels time. Each photo must be posted in a separate message, with its number (1, 2, or 3) indicated. Don’t forget to add a short explanation (commentary, location, etc.).

**Voting** Every VF member can vote for the 3 photos they consider the best, based on their own criteria and the theme. Voting will take place from Tuesday, November 26 to Saturday, November 30 at 11:59 PM Brussels time.

Photos will be ranked in order of preference: - 1st photo: 3 points - 2nd photo: 2 points - 3rd photo: 1 point

The winner is the photographer whose photo receives the most points. Results will be published on December 1. In case of a tie, the number of first-place votes will decide. The winner will have the honor of organizing December’s contest.

Photos that have already been nominated (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) in another contest are not eligible for this one.

**Example of Art Nouveau architecture**

Victor Horta’s house and workshop (considered the "Father of Art Nouveau") on Rue Américaine in Saint-Gilles (Brussels, Belgium).

Villa Melchiorri, Via Cavour in Ferrara (Emilia-Romagna, Italy).

Not much success so far... (same for VF, actually). Let’s try to revive this!

Hi there,

A bit of a strange (if I may say so 😐) contest this time...

4 participants + only 1 voter, who’s also a philosopher on top of that 😛

And it’s UnaMilanese who wins with... 3 points for the photo of the Casa Galimberti façade in Milan.

So she gets the honor of proposing December’s contest (good luck 😊).

In second place, Herodotos with 2 points for a photo taken in Riga (Latvia).

And last but not least, Kate with 1 point for a photo of the upper part of the former Old England Stores, which now house the Musical Instruments Museum (Brussels, Belgium).

I’ll slip away quietly now...

UnaMilanese · 2024-12-01

Hey everyone,

.....

What can I say...

Thanks for giving it a shot. Thanks to voyajou for appreciating Casa Galimberti.

And also:

I’d be happy to suggest the theme for the next contest. However, I’m not sure the lack of interest this thread experienced was solely due to the difficulty of the chosen theme. It’s possible that in the revived VoyageForum, there isn’t currently an audience for this kind of friendly challenge—sharing beautiful photos outside of travel journals, which seems to be the only somewhat dynamic section. So, it might not make much sense to keep pushing.

But I could be wrong, so the future of the contest will depend on the following poll: Do you want it to continue? If there aren’t at least 15 "yes" responses, I’ll drop it.

Unless there are at least 15 yes responses, I’ll drop it.

Okay if there are at least 15 participants for the upcoming contest :P

I’m up for keeping this going, but since I only use my phone, I don’t have many photos saved up. I still haven’t gotten into the habit of checking the VF forum. Good habits slip away fast. Nilsou

UnaMilanese · 2024-12-03

Good evening everyone,

So there are 8 of us—not exactly a huge crowd (how do you even spell that word?)—and with such low turnout, it doesn’t seem all that worthwhile. I’ll leave the poll open; the start date for this hypothetical challenge isn’t super critical. I’ve been browsing past contests, a bit surprised that airports as such have never been a theme. I dream of a tribute to Rimbaud: embracing the dawn.

Have a lovely evening! Catherine

I dream of a tribute to Rimbaud: embracing the dawn

You’ll embrace the autumn dawn.

Even if nothing stirs yet on the forum’s front. The contest seems dead. Shadows linger but don’t dare venture in.

You’ll walk, awakening the hesitant and the half-hearted, and others will watch, and more will join them.

The first step will be, in a space already filled with sepia and vibrant colors, a subject that draws in, charms, and unites.

Then you’ll receive the images one by one. In the contest, by announcing the theme. In the discussion, by being witty.

Art Nouveau scared people off. Few likely had façades, stained-glass windows, or marble... You won’t chase anyone away.

At the end of the road, when handing out the laurels, someone else will take over and set off in turn.

To retrace the path, DARE. The dawn is always a promise...

Hello,

You're right. In the end, the number of participants and voters doesn’t really matter. What counts is the joy each person will have reliving their sunrises and sharing them. Since we’re a bit pressed for time with a contest ending on December 25th and the winning photo being chosen on New Year’s Day, I’ll try to get to writing the two posts tonight—but the theme will be this: embrace the dawn.

Hi Catherine,

It's a contest for early birds, so...

I must have a few photos, but not much.

A late riser hiker! 😮

Hello,

Between the themes already chosen, the frenzy of this damn Milanese life that leaves very little room for the wandering of imagination (I just thought I could have picked "running" or "rushing"😄), and the fact that I’m not the most competent person to organize this contest (talk about a poisoned gift on my birthday with those cursed 3 points!), I’m doing what I can! 😛

I walk more than I hike...

The most beautiful sunrises I’ve ever seen were on my way to work in the morning.

Unfortunately, you’ve gotta choose between driving or taking photos...

Yeah, it’s not easy to find a fresh theme! !😉

in the category of a backhanded gift on my birthday

Should I take that to mean today’s the day? If so, happy birthday! 😉😉 Hope your theme brings us all together again...

In the end, the number of participants and voters doesn’t matter. The only thing that counts is the joy each person gets from reliving their sunrises and sharing them.

The sun can be shy sometimes, but it always rises, even if we don’t see it. Lovely theme and a beautiful metaphor...

I just found out yesterday, November 6th, in my spam folder that the forum had reopened. Good thing I was looking for something there, otherwise the messages would’ve been automatically deleted. I totally missed the announcement about this contest... I had photos on theme taken in Nancy, Vienna, Paris, and other places. No big deal, I caught up and signed up to follow the new discussions.

The contest is over, but I’m adding a few photos taken in Vienna in 2018, the year marking the centenary of the deaths of four great Austrian artists: Egon Schiele and three members of the Vienna Secession, the name given to Art Nouveau in Vienna—Gustav Klimt, Otto Wagner, and Kolo Moser. Numerous exhibitions dedicated to these artists were held throughout 2018. To celebrate the centenary, temporary walkways were installed so visitors could admire up close the mural decorations at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, created by Gustav Klimt.

Two adjoining buildings, constructed in 1899 by Otto Wagner, were beautifully restored. One is decorated with a flowering tree spreading across ceramic tiles, while the other is adorned with sculptures and gilded motifs designed by Kolo Moser.

At the Museum of Applied Arts, you can see the bentwood chairs by Thonet that conquered all of Europe in the early 20th century, along with decorative works by members of the Secession.

And finally, the subway station designed by Otto Wagner on Karlsplatz.

Have a great trip to Vienna.
