First trip to Morocco: what to see and do?

Hi there, We're interested in urbanism, architecture, Arab-Muslim culture, and the daily life of locals... A rough idea: Fez and Meknes. A good plan? Maybe too touristy? We prefer off-the-beaten-path destinations (we’ve traveled to Iran, for example). What else is there to see in the region? We’re open to any suggestions. Thanks for your tips!

Ouch... that’s gonna sting 😎... I think some others had the same idea... Meknes will be quieter, though. If you want to visit Fez without running into too many other tourists also searching for authenticity (there are way more people looking for authenticity in Fez and Marrakech than in the *real* "off-the-beaten-path" spots), you’ll have to set off a few bomb-scare alerts...

P.S.: In the medina, you’ll easily find people who can show you what you’d like to see, so stay cautious and don’t be naive...

I’d recommend the imperial cities: Fez, Meknes, Marrakech, and Rabat. Out of the four, Meknes and Rabat are the most peaceful and aren’t too far from each other. You could also visit Tetouan, a less touristy city than the others, and explore its lovely medina.

There’s off-the-beaten-path in any destination. Sometimes it’s just about choosing the right time, sometimes it’s about daring to push open half-closed doors, not hesitating to "bother" workers on a renovation site—basically, being curious. Take intercity buses, let yourself be taken to the terminus... so many discoveries await. Be open to encounters, to the start of conversations, to invitations. Even in big touristy cities, there’s off-the-beaten-path—it’s all about your attitude. Fes and Meknès, yes, they’re worth it. For both the cities and the surroundings. Have a great trip!

Thanks for the heads-up. Okay, I realize there are a few contradictions in my criteria 😏 Might need to rethink my plan... But anyway, we always travel off-season. In Morocco, it’ll probably be autumn or winter.

Yes, totally agree with you—the HSB is sometimes just a few hundred meters from the tourist center. Thanks for your tips, especially the one about construction sites! :)

Hi! I went to Meknes in February but I could only see the mausoleum—all the other buildings were under construction! I don’t know if the work has been finished since then, but watch out...

Hi there, Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll look into it. I’m planning to go in October or November 2025 (to avoid the crowds). That gives me plenty of time. I’ll post updates on this forum.

The end of the construction is scheduled for next May.
