Crossing Borders by Car: Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania
Pppaulus · 2024-11-25
Hi there,
We’re doing a staged tour of Africa in our Citroën Dyane 2CV.
We left Belgium and our car is currently in Zambia. We’ll be joining it at the start of 2025 to continue on to Malawi and Tanzania.
We’d love to chat with overlanders who’ve already crossed these borders with a vehicle—without necessarily having a carnet de passage, given the costs and guarantees required.
Thanks

Hi Philippe,
Since I’m traveling in this part of the world with a vehicle registered in South Africa, I’m not affected by this *carnet* and won’t be much help to you.
That said, your plan isn’t ordinary, and even though the Citroën 2CV seems like the ideal car given its simplicity, you’re bound to turn heads on the roads. Any photos?

Hi there,
I don’t have any more answers to your question and I’m sorry about that, but I’d love to see some pics of the ride too! !

Hi there,
In 2018, we did a tour of Southern Africa in our Ford Ranger equipped with a camper cell.
We arrived by container in Walvis Bay, then traveled through South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, and returned by container from Walvis Bay.
The trip lasted 5 months.
We had a Carnet de Passage issued by the Automobile Club de France, with a guaranteed deposit of 25% of the vehicle's value (the amount is declarative).
We only presented the CPD upon arrival in Namibia and at the first border crossing. Due to the Southern African Development Community (Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, etc.), there was no need to present and stamp the carnet at every border crossing.
Just having the exit stamp from the last country was enough to recover the deposit.
We didn’t encounter any problems.
Best regards
