Traveling to Thimphu (Bhutan) from Kolkata by land

Eidyl · 2024-11-25

Hi everyone! So great to be back on this Forum! My question is in the title: is it possible to reach Bhutan from Kolkata by entering through the Phuntsholing border crossing? If anyone has already done this route, it would really put my mind at ease... 😉 Thanks in advance for all your replies! 🤪 Lydie

Reaching Thimphu (Bhutan) from Calcutta by land

Hi there,

Yes, it's possible. You need to have a visa, which you can only get from one of the many authorized agencies. You also need a double-entry Indian visa. I think it's about a six-hour drive to Thimphu.

Our trip to Bhutan is HERE

Thanks so much for this precious reply! Thanks also for the blog and the beautiful photos that make me dream of being there too. I’d like to continue to Bangladesh by land afterward, but I’m not sure how to exit Bhutan or enter Bangladesh (via India, of course). Best, Lydie

Hi Lydie,

I’d then like to continue to Bangladesh by land, but I’m not sure how to exit Bhutan or enter Bangladesh (via India, of course)

After crossing the country from west to east, you can exit through the Indo-Bhutanese border post at Samdrup in the east, which then allows you to reach Guwahati, the capital of Assam. After that, for getting to Bangladesh, I have no idea. There must be a way, since many Bangladeshis—who are visa-exempt—visit Bhutan.

Good luck and safe travels!
