Exploring the jungle around the San Juan River

Hi, A guide for a trek to get into the jungle area near Los Guatuzos, or alternatively near Bartola, close to the large Indio-Maíz reserve? Who knows these areas? We’d love to discover some wilder wetlands, maybe spot some wildlife... travel up tributaries by lancha... So if you’ve got any tips or experiences to share, I’m all ears! Thanks Chantal

For Bartola and Indio Maiz, you’ve got Juan Ardilla in El Castillo, which is a bit upstream on the river. He’s well-known and easy to find in the village. He’s an excellent guide who can take you by lancha on the Rio San Juan and its tributaries, and accompany you into the jungle. He offers one- or two-day trips into the reserve. You can find him online. El Castillo is easy to reach by lancha from San Carlos, on the shore of Lake Nicaragua.

I can confirm the previous message—from San Carlos, heading toward El Castillo, you’ll find guides on-site. And if you're looking for a rustic, nature-focused hotel, you’ve got to check out Gran River Lodge. You can get there by bus from San Carlos or by boat. The Río San Juan is an amazing river; it’s where I saw the most wildlife in Central America.

We’re thinking of heading to Corn Island! It’s true that getting around takes a while and gets pretty complicated once you step off the usual tourist path.
