Economic situation in Sri Lanka

Hi everyone, I’m thinking of visiting Sri Lanka at the end of February 2025, but I’m worried about the economic situation (shortages of food, electricity, internet, fuel, etc.) as well as the political and social climate (strikes, protests, etc.). Has anyone here been there recently and can describe what it’s like?

Is the current situation stable enough to travel in this beautiful country without any issues? Thanks for your replies.

Hi, I went there a few months ago and had no issues with food or fuel, nor with safety—all good. The current problem is inflation, which mainly affects locals. You can travel without any worries :-)

hi there, we just got back only 15 days ago, everything went perfectly—it’s such an easy country to visit. We used all kinds of transport: buses, taxis, tuk-tuks, trains. People are really helpful.

It’s super easy to take buses. There’s always someone on duty at the bus stations who’ll tell you which bus to take and where to change... We didn’t have a single issue.

We even met a French guy who lives in Colombo, and he showed us around the city in a unique way on our last day. We arrived in Colombo in the morning, left our luggage at one of his friend’s places, and caught our flight that same evening.

The food is amazing—meals are often cooked right in front of you. We don’t like spicy food, so we just said "no spicy," and that worked fine.

We didn’t meet any other French people except in Colombo, but we saw lots of young women traveling solo—Swiss, Spanish, and Italian— as well as two German and Swiss couples with young kids.

We also spent two days at a place run by a Dutch guy who looks after two elephants, rescuing them from riding tours. You can join them in the forest and watch them bathe.

If you’d like more details, just ask—I’m happy to help. But honestly, you can go with your eyes closed. The water’s at 28°C—it’s just incredible the first time you step in. The beaches are stunning, and they put out loungers for free as long as you order something.

Hi there, I was wondering the same thing because I read some articles about "safety" that made me hesitant. What about vaccines/malaria treatment if we stick to the "classic" ones? We’re traveling with our two kids, 19 and 16, and they were really excited but got disappointed when I shared my concerns after reading all those articles. Thanks for your replies! Carole

Hello, When were the alarmist articles you read published? Because as far as I know, there are currently no security or supply issues in Sri Lanka.
