Train from Bangkok (Thailand) to Vientiane (Laos)

Hi there, I’m heading to Laos at the end of the year. We’ll be landing in Bangkok, and from there, we’d like to hop straight on a train to Vientiane. I think the line exists now. I’m guessing it’s from the new station, which I don’t know yet. Can anyone tell me about it, as well as the visa for Laos if I take this mode of transport? Thanks

Yes, train from the new Bangkok station. Visa issued at the Lao border when the train stops—same conditions: $41 and a photo.

Hi everyone,

So I bought my train tickets from Bangkok Aphiwat to Vientiane Khamsavat. If anyone on the forum has done this route recently, could you let me know about the visa? Do we still get the classic visa at the border checkpoint in Nong Khai like before, or is it mandatory to get an e-visa now? And if so, how does the e-visa process work?

Regarding the train journey, I’ve heard it’s not the same trains as before—are there still vendors selling food and drinks on board like it used to be, or should I bring my own supplies for the trip?

I’ve traveled a lot in Southeast Asia, but it’s been 10 years since I was last here, and things have changed, as they do everywhere. Thanks for any firsthand experiences you can share!

Also, I’m wondering about the new Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bang Sue) station—can you still find street food around the station while waiting for the 6 AM train, or is it a sterile new station with just fast food that’s not very good? Back when I took the train from Hua Lamphong, you could hang out in the neighborhood and find great spots to relax...

Thanks!
