Strictly speaking, dawn comes before sunrise, followed by the first light of day. But I don’t feel like splitting hairs. As long as it’s "early in the morning," as much as possible during the break of day.



Here in Nysiros, the sun must have risen 15/20 minutes ago—it’s still what I’d call "dawn."

Me too—I paid to see a sunrise. It was at Mount Bromo in Java, but the result wasn’t great because the sun hid away.

The time of day makes all the difference! In one case, the day is beginning, in the other, it’s ending. But... is it really that different when it comes to light? I’ll admit I’m not sure.

I don’t know how many contests there have been (hey Hérikles?), but...

Revisiting a theme from time to time shouldn’t be sacrilege. Other members, other images, would easily renew it.

Presenting a photo—whether it won or not—already submitted in a previous contest shouldn’t be blasphemy. Other members, fresh perspectives, would confirm the first victory, grant a rematch... or indirectly mark a defeat. (Submitting a photo that was already rewarded and seeing it rejected—isn’t that an excellent exercise for the ego?)

So, 1) we can see there was already a similar topic, and 2) I managed to find my photo in another thread—it didn’t win in the end, but it did make the podium.

That said, the resolution is pretty low (it’s kind of a trend these days), and it doesn’t really allow for displaying it properly...

1. With the consequence that an unscrupulous participant could submit a sunset instead of a sunrise? That’s between them and their conscience. Personally, I couldn’t care less.

2. The contest on a similar theme took place in 2013, so, at a rate of 12 contests per year and considering the game was paused for 4 years, there have been roughly 7x12 = 84 contests. It’s also obvious that in 11 years, the travelers here haven’t taken a single dawn photo since the theme was already covered.

3. My only goal is to not block this game. Let the photography pros who are picky about the organization step up and take over. I’d be absolutely thrilled to pass them the baton.

You can't tell if it's evening or morning unless you know the site and its orientation. For example, the photo of the San Giorgio church in Venice is definitely in the morning sun, while it's the façade of San Marco that's lit by the setting sun... when I go there in October, the sun's path changes every day. No matter for the contest—we trust each other and pick the photos we like best.
