Biking through tulip fields near Amsterdam: transport and accommodations

Hi, We’re traveling as a couple in mid-April for 7 days in the Netherlands. We want to see Amsterdam, the tulips, and the windmills. We’d like to bike through the tulip fields. We’re not athletes, but physical ability probably won’t be an issue. How many days should we devote to each part? (Amsterdam-windmills-tulips) Is it better to stay outside Amsterdam for the windmill-tulip portion? (like 2 nights in Leiden?) Is renting bikes a problem? Should we rent a car, or is public transport efficient? Thanks so much in advance for taking the time to answer! Mélanie

Hi there, We stayed in Noordwijkerhout and found it perfect. It’s really close to the Keukenhof flower park, and it’s a charming little town with all the amenities. The accommodation "Boutique Hotel De Raetskamer" was right in the center but quiet, with a great welcome and a common room with a fridge and coffee/tea available.

No problem renting bikes in Amsterdam, and cycling is easy too—it’s flat! Just watch out for other cyclists who tend to ride pretty fast.

For windmills, I did this route in Zaanse Schans. It’s just outside Amsterdam, and you can visit the windmills.

For tulips, don’t miss Keukenhof Park—grab skip-the-line tickets to save time.
