Hiking independently in China: is wild camping allowed?

Svdl · 2024-12-10

Hi there, I’m planning to hike in China in July/August, no specific regions in mind yet but probably in the southwest. Can anyone tell me if it’s generally easy to do multi-day independent hikes and if wild camping in a tent is allowed? Thanks

Hi, It's tough to trek completely independently and camp wild in China. In the southwest? So in Xinjiang province? I don’t want to discourage you, but the province is under increasing control. Twenty years ago, it might’ve been possible, but now... 🤪

It's still possible, but you have to be super careful about everything and stay as discreet as possible—so it’s not really the vibe for a nice, relaxed hike 😅

Thanks for your replies @Parigino and @Nimou74. Given how tricky wild camping is, do you know if there’s a network of mountain huts that could still allow multi-day hikes with relative independence? I’ve traveled to China several times, but always in cities, and I really have no idea how exploring nature works in this country...

Sorry, I have absolutely no idea, but don’t let that discourage you. Outside of Xinjiang and the Tibetan regions, wild camping should be less complicated. Bad luck, though—the Kham and Amdo are among the most beautiful places to hike.

A bit like many treks in Nepal, in other words?

Unfortunately, no—not to my knowledge, at least. Few countries offer that advantage, actually. Where are you planning to go? I thought it was western China, so Xinjiang. I went there about twenty years ago, and my husband did a two-week trek there. It was in the Mustagh Ata region. No huts at all. He just hired a camel driver who acted as a guide, and they camped in tents. It was extremely rustic. This year, we’re planning to visit Gansu and part of Qinghai (without trekking there). There are trekking possibilities in Qinghai, but hiking solo there?? Around Langmusi, between Gansu and Sichuan, there are also hiking opportunities. It’ll probably be easier for you to hike independently in Yunnan since there’s more infrastructure. I’m thinking especially of northern Yunnan—Yubeng, the Meiji Mountains, Tiger Leaping Gorge... For the rest of the country, it’s still pretty complicated unless you go through an agency, but the cost won’t be the same... And there’s very little info on this topic. Otherwise, pretty much everywhere in the country, you can do day hikes, but you know the conditions, and don’t expect to be alone... 😉

Hi Nimou74, thanks so much for your reply! I still have a pretty vague idea, but the plan was to travel by train/bus from Beijing to Urumqi, making stops for some treks. I’ll explore things a bit more based on your tips. Thanks again, and happy travels to you!
