Photographing the Venice Carnival

Hi! I’m an amateur photographer and I dream of photographing the Venice Carnival. I’m not really much of a partygoer, so I’m wondering how I’d feel at this event—I’m afraid I might feel a bit like an intruder... I know I’m overthinking it since hundreds of photographers go there. How did you feel about it? Thanks!

Hi! Despite appearances, Venice isn’t really a party town like Barcelona or Ibiza. By "party town," I mean a city with tons of bars and nightclubs. Venice is more of a museum city, yeah. And if you feel like an outsider, it’s because the locals mostly just want you to spend your euros 😊. So no need to feel guilty at all!

Hi Alain, Like you, I’m a photographer and I’ve been to Venice several times, including once specifically during Carnival season—but that was a long time ago. The masked participants, all dressed up in sumptuous costumes, often in groups, were happy to pose for photos... I had my Nikon with me, and you had to push through the crowds, but it wasn’t impossible. The spectacle is out on the streets, of course—St. Mark’s Square and the surrounding streets. There’s also a whole schedule: parades, processions, contests for the most beautiful costume, balls, and concerts—some are paid events and probably require reservations. But I’m sure you’re already aware of the full schedule. A tip: dedicate at least two full days (Carnival never sleeps!) before Shrove Tuesday to photograph portraits and details, because while the crowds are always present and dense, they’ll be slightly less overwhelming... AND on the big day, you’ll have to elbow your way through and stand your ground. ...and what if you wore a mask to blend in? Wishing you a great trip over there! Carassou
