Renting a vehicle in Costa Rica

Hi there, We’re heading to Costa Rica in March 2025 for a road trip from north to south. What type of vehicle would be best? And, based on your experience, which rental company would you recommend doing business with? Thanks! Denis, from Quebec

Hi there

Generally, a non-4x4 car is enough if you stick to the main roads, so it really depends on your itinerary. As for agencies to prioritize, I tend to recommend the big companies to avoid scams. Here’s a few highlights of what you might see during our trips, which should help you steer clear of some issues ;)

Hi Denis, Unless you're driving to Bahia Drake, a 4x4 isn’t necessary. Personally, I rented a Suzuki Vitara through the site/forum "Todo Costa Rica," which has the advantage of reserving your vehicle without needing to pay in advance for a competitive rate. Still, I’d recommend an SUV—some roads can be pretty rocky. Merry Christmas! !
