Layover luggage in Washington IAD

Hi, I have a flight from San Diego to Newark with a layover at Washington IAD (Dulles). In Washington, do I need to collect my luggage or will it be transferred automatically?

Hey, Do you have a single ticket for San Diego / Newark (so with the same airline) or two separate tickets (San Diego / Washington - Washington/Newark)? Because in the first case, your baggage will be checked through, but not in the second.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a connection in the US without arriving from a Canadian airport with pre-clearance, but I think you’ll need to do what we used to do here: collect your luggage, go through customs, re-check your luggage, go through security again, and walk to your gate... You only pick up your luggage when heading to the United States, not the other way around

You only collect your luggage when traveling *to* the United States, not the other way around

Yeah, I totally misread the question.
