ETA now mandatory for the UK

Back in the good old days when the UK was part of the European Union, a European ID card was all you needed to visit. After Brexit, a passport became required. Now, on top of that, you’ll also have to pay (£10) for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation):

UK expands digital travel system to include more visitors - GOV.UK

Eligible Europeans can start applying for this ETA from March 5, 2025, and it will be mandatory for travel from April 2, 2025.

Good evening,

Yes, the temptation to quietly scam travelers is strong for states facing financial difficulties, and they don’t see much harm in indulging in this little pleasure. Some governments have realized that bad reasons can justify imposing taxes—so they tax. There may be arguments for it, but they’re just excuses. A slightly annoyed traveler can simply multiply their on-the-ground expenses tenfold in response—people aren’t stupid 🙂.

Thanks for this timely reminder. We, who have a son living there (married and dual nationality), had completely forgotten about this new rule. It’s still cheaper than the US ESTA.

I'm outraged!!! Not the £12, but the principle! These politicians really have no shame, do they?!
