Maybe it would make sense to go in chronological order and visit the National Pearl Harbor Museum first? The Japanese present themselves as innocent victims, but it was by attacking Hawaii in December 1941 that Japan itself started the war against the United States, which resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths to reclaim the Pacific islands—and would have caused even more if Japan had to be invaded by land to force its surrender. Hiroshima (and Nagasaki) caused casualties, but they spared many more American lives (and Japanese lives too, for that matter). You reap what you sow...

However, the goal of my article isn’t to ignore the broader historical context but to share the deeply moving experience of visiting the Hiroshima Peace Museum. The museum doesn’t aim to downplay Japan’s responsibilities in the conflict. Instead, it seeks to raise awareness about the terrible human consequences of war, particularly those of nuclear weapons.
