Portable mosquito net for hiking in India

Hey everyone,

I’m planning a hiking trip to India in 2025 with my wife and another couple.

We’ll most likely be leaving at the end of April (TBC).

This isn’t my first time hiking abroad, and I’ve often run into parasites that take advantage of the night to bother you (you know what I’m talking about, haha).

I’ve dealt with flies, mosquitoes, and all kinds of critters during my sleep before, but for this trip to India—which could already be pretty hectic—I really want to be prepared and avoid this issue.

If you know where I can find effective mosquito nets that won’t give me any trouble with mosquitoes, I’m all ears!

Hello You can find them in all the bazaars. Ask for a mosquito net. Otherwise, on Amazon, but most guest houses are equipped with mosquito nets, though sometimes with holes! Plan to bring some patches to cover them up! Happy travels

I gathered that the person was talking about hiking and therefore a mosquito net for a tent or hammock. The shops you mentioned only sell mosquito nets for rooms and regular beds (different sizes depending on the bed size).

Otherwise on Amazon, but most guest houses are equipped with mosquito nets, though sometimes with holes! Plan to bring some band-aids to patch them up!

Amazon.in once you're in India, or Decathlon if there's one in the stopover city. But it's best to buy it before leaving—it's not very heavy or bulky. It's not always easy to set up in a room afterward... No hooks to hang it from. I recommend the igloo mosquito net.

And in Himachal Pradesh, which I know well, it’s actually quite cold in April and May. I remember a trip to Sangla where I stayed in a tent village and had amazing days in breathtaking, remote landscapes—but freezing polar nights. 😉 I still don’t understand what these people are planning to do for overnight stays.

I don’t know Sangla, but in Himachal Pradesh in April, you’re pretty much guaranteed *not* to be dying of heat. Cold?! Well, it depends on the altitude. If you’re trekking above 3,000m near the Rothang Pass in April, you might even run into snow! But in Kullu, Manali, or Manikaran, I’ve been there in April and didn’t really feel cold—though, like anywhere, you can get exceptional weather. In India, outside the Himalayas, I’ve mostly been too hot! (in April/May)

I still don’t understand what these people plan to do for overnight stays.

Everywhere I’ve been in India, I haven’t suffered from mosquitoes or other insects. I only saw them in eastern India, in Assam (very humid!), but everywhere I slept, there was a mosquito net—even though I only stayed in budget guesthouses. Bringing a mosquito net is only useful (in my opinion) if you’re camping and below 2,000m.

It’s good news that your late-April departure is still up in the air because you’re likely to suffer *a lot* unless you’ve planned to add air conditioning to your mosquito net—or, as mentioned earlier, you’re heading to the Himalayan region. Happy prep!

They don’t seem really interested in our answers😏 If we knew where they’re planning to trek, we could definitely give them more specific info. Apart from the Himalayas above 2000m, trekking in India at the end of April/beginning of May can turn into a nightmare... and not just because of mosquitoes!
