Getting to Rome from the port of Civitavecchia

Does anyone have any tips for visiting Rome from the Civitavecchia port of call with a guide taxi? Thanks for your reply! M.B

Is this for a day trip to Rome, or is your cruise simply ending in Civitavecchia?

If it’s to get to Rome:

The most budget-friendly (and enjoyable) way is by train. You can easily reach the station from the port. From what I remember, the journey takes about an hour. You can buy your tickets in advance. First-class tickets are also very affordable!

Then you’ll arrive at Termini Station, where you can simply walk to the main sights, take a taxi, or hop on a bus.

We did this a few years ago and spent 3 days in Rome—it was just perfect!

For a day trip to Rome with a return to the ship:

The train does have its downsides, though, since strikes are pretty common. You’ll need to keep that in mind.

It’s always safer to book an excursion through the cruise line, like "Rome on Your Own," which includes round-trip transport and lets you explore at your own pace.

Last April, we opted for the cruise line’s Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, which included the trip to Rome. It allowed us to discover new neighborhoods (it was our third visit to Rome, after all!). So, it’s also a great option for exploring the city.

Otherwise, a taxi ride from the port to Rome is *very* expensive—definitely not recommended!

Hi Frippe, I see you took the COSTA on-hop excursion to Rome. Could you tell me if the bus has fixed times? Do we have to stick to the 3 scheduled stops? Does the bus make several trips throughout the day? Thanks for any details. Lysie
