Layovers in Muscat and Doha: Organized Excursions or Independent Exploration?
Verbatim · 2025-01-22
Hi everyone,
So happy to be back on this forum.
We’re going on a cruise with stops in Muscat and Doha, and I was wondering if it’s better to book an excursion or if it’s possible to explore on our own.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Layovers in Muscat and Doha: guided tours or independent exploration?

Hi there,
I haven’t been to Doha, but we visited Muscat in February 2024.
It’s easy to grab a taxi on the spot to explore:
- The Grand Mosque—arrive early to get in.
You can hire an English-speaking guide for $5 on-site.
- The Opera House, which is stunning.
- The exterior of the palace and viewpoints of the two forts.
We ended our day at the souk.
Some folks who booked the MSC excursion couldn’t visit the mosque because they arrived too late and only saw it from the outside.
Meanwhile, we spent 1.5 hours inside the mosque!
And we were even offered tea and pastries near the gift shop on our way out.
It was a really enriching day.
Happy cruising!
Helene

Layovers in Muscat and Doha: Excursions or Independent Exploration?

Hi there,
we’re boarding in early March from Doha and arriving beforehand to revisit some spots on our own—it’s pretty straightforward.
There are Hop-On buses that circle the most interesting places with the option to get off, and on port days there are ones that leave from the port. That’s how it was during our last visit. Otherwise, there’s a shuttle to get into the city.
In Muscat, we took an excursion to see the wadis.
Happy cruising!
