Hi everyone! Any idea what the current situation is like for homestays in Russia? Any recent firsthand experiences? Thanks in advance! :)

Hello, It's still possible. If you stay more than 7 business days on a tourist visa, you need to register. (3 days for a private visa). In principle, the person hosting you will need to register you, along with you, at the UFMS (foreigners' service). As for the cost, it varies depending on the region you're visiting. It's more complicated these days to get a Russian SIM card or open a bank account—you need to be registered to do that. Best regards, Patrick

If your question is whether you can stay with a local host, then yes, it’s possible and very much appreciated. If you're wondering how to go about it, I’d recommend signing up on Couchsurfing—it’ll help you find someone to host you, show you around the region/city, lend a hand, and who knows, maybe even make some friends. As Lapagaille mentioned, you’ll need to ask your host if they can register you with the immigration service for a small fee (in the Far East, I paid around 1,100 rubles, which is about 10 €), naturally in the local currency. All you’ll need is your passport, and your host must provide theirs along with proof of ownership for their property. They don’t have to pay anything.

If you go for this option, consider bringing some French gifts (Calisson sweets, wine, sausage, Calvados—just a few ideas...).

Hi there, In principle, check-in is free, but of course there’s compensation for the time and work the person puts in to register a guest. There are other sites for accommodation—I’ll have to look them up. Best regards,
