Does anyone know if you can access Google, etc. in China with this plan and avoid needing to use a VPN?

Hi there, We were there last December and had no issues with our plans—everything worked because you're on Free roaming. However, if you enable Wi-Fi to connect at the airport, hotel, or anywhere in China, all the social media we use here are censored, so keep Wi-Fi off.

Watch out: Google Maps is useless in China—it doesn’t work even on roaming. You’ll need to use their app, Baidu Maps.

Thanks Patrick, I think that’s the answer I needed. So, Wi-Fi for Chinese sites, and the Free plan for everything else? With my Free plan, can I avoid needing a VPN?

Yes, to access Chinese websites, turn on your Wi-Fi everywhere. For everything else, switch off and stay on Free roaming—no VPN needed.
