Finding Faroese kronur and a SIM card in the Faroe Islands

I’m coming with my little batch of questions, thinking it’s more sociable to ask here than my favorite AI.

1) In the Faroe Islands, you pay in Danish kroner—that’s clear—and mostly by card. But there are also Faroese kronur, and I’d love to bring some back. Are they available at ATMs? There don’t seem to be any real exchange bureaus in the capital.

2) The Faroe Islands aren’t part of the EU roaming agreement. Local SIM cards are supposedly available everywhere, but does anyone have an idea of prices or an operator to recommend?

Hi Michel,

1- No memory of that... I didn’t pay attention. You’ll definitely get Faroese kroner at some point when you get change back.

2- My carrier (the low-cost version of a carrier whose name is a color...) includes the Faroe Islands in its plan.

1 - Currency matters a lot to me; while I don’t care much about tourist sites, I love this piece of culture. I’ll still try to find some in good condition at a bank.

2 - I don’t think my SIM cards—a 2 €/month one in the name of freedom (which means everything to me) and a fairly cheap one from an SFR subcontractor—have free roaming in the Faroe Islands. If I remember the password to access these accounts, I’ll check. Thanks.

Hi Michel,

If you make a payment in Danish kroner, there’s a good chance you’ll get your change in Faroese króna.

From my experience...

I’ve never been given anything but Faroese króna; that said, people don’t really use cash here—it’s pretty unusual to do so. The ATMs I tried also dispensed króna, but only in 100-krónur notes, not the smaller bills. There are no local coins.
